This isn’t the first compilation from Sega, and we’re used to retro compilations that systematically offer hundreds of hours of gameplay. Sonic Origins Plus is a collection of 16 remastered games from Sega’s flagship franchise, including 12 games released on Game Gear, Sega’s handheld console for those who knew it. In addition to the usual Sonic, Knuckles and Tails, for the first time you’ll be able to play with Amy Rose, a welcome novelty. For owners of Sonic Origins, it gets even better, as Sonic Origins Plus is also an extension, with additional content for the game on top of the other retro games available. In short, Sega hasn’t finished with the blue hedgehog yet, as we’ve seen over the last few years, and the franchise is still going strong!

Sonic Origins Plus remaster of classic Sonic games, including the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It will feature enhanced graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, and new content, such as new playable characters, levels, and modes. Sonic Origins Plus looks to be a must-play for both longtime fans of the franchise (like me!) and newcomers alike.

Even if modern games have extremely beautiful visuals, it’s sometimes good to step back in time and replay classic titles. And what a pleasure it is to rediscover them with remastered graphics, new modes, and additional content! Forthcoming Sonic Origins Plus will bring us plenty of games to indulge our nostalgia.

Good news: if you already own Sonic Origins, which was released last year, you’ll be able to upgrade it to the latest version. So buying this bundle as DLC will cost you a lot less. It will be available on the most popular platforms, including Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC. Hopefully, the improved edition will be much better optimized for Steam users, as the original game had performance problems and a poor keyboard layout.

In short, I can say that it’s a good thing to get more content, but it would be better if the developers thought about fixing the bugs before releasing a new version.

Set to release on 23th of June, Sonic Origins Plus is expanding upon Sonic Origin, released exactly 1 year ago as a project to remaster old Sonic Classics, with improved visuals and a few quality of life improvements.

Sonic Origins Plus sports the 4 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD, and add as a bonus 12 Sonic titles released on the Game Gear (mostly ports of home console version).

On top of that it adds Amy as a playable character, with different sprites resembling the artwork of each respective game (a rather nice attention to detail), although we gotta see how they are going to implement her in Sonic CD, since there’s a level where we need to save her. Moreover Knuckle will also be playable in said Sonic CD.

This in theory seems all great, and especially with fan favourite Amy now available in the classic games. Unfortunately there’s a lot to debate about Origins Plus. First of all the team while hearing people criticism and feedback, they did not focused on fixing those issues on Origin itself and instead focused on doing those on the side while neglecting for the most part the horrible status Origin was at launch. With plenty of bugs, performance issues and crashes. Moreover SEGA is now releasing this updated version for the launch price of 39,99€ of Origin, while instead now giving it to the fans who actually bought it in good faith ahead of Plus launch, not even to those who bought the deluxe, instead charging them another 10€, closing in to almost 55€ while everyone else’s gonna get it for retail price.

On top of that Sega went in and added the Game Gear version of the 12 classic roms , even though they all have console ports, mainly the Master System version, which was the console developed around those games, which run on the intended screen resolution instead of the cropped version of the Game Gear, which while decent ports it often had a different experience due to not being able to see a lot of the things happening on the screen.

While the overall “new” offer is 39,99€ (with also a physical release) comprising of 3 remastered old classic + 12 bonus games with bugs and fixes is good for new buyers, it still pretty painful and worrying how Sega is shrugging off the same customers who supported the Origin release, which only had 4 games with some minor updates while the state of the overall experience was bad to say the least. I suggest waiting for it to come down in price (like 25€), instead of going ahead of launch and pre-order it. We saw the result of a 1 year release, so you better make sure the game will get support if it’s not in a great shape even with the “fixed version”.

Compilation of 16 Sonic games. Of those, 4 have been given a limited remake, allowing them to be played in 16:9 (in addition to the original 4:3) and giving you unlimited lives. In addition, you also get extra game modes and a museum for which you can unlock pictures, videos and music from the period of the games:
– Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
– Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)
– Sonic CD (1993)
– Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (1994)

Unfortunately it is not the complete collection and the lack of Chaotix and 3D Blast in particular is a pity. In addition, only the Game Gear versions are included in the collection and not the Master System versions. The games were actually developed for that console and with those you see more of the environment, making the games more fun. It is also the gameplay as was intended by the developers.

Another problem is that last year’s Sonic Origins release had all sorts of bugs that haven’t been fixed. So the question is whether you also get those bugs here and whether SEGA will fix them now or whether you have to make do with buggy games.
