A Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) is an eastern role-playing video game originating from East Asia, typically Japan.
JRPGs can be thought of in two ways. The first is that the game was made in Japan, therefore making it a JRPG. The second is that the game is inspired by traditional games made in Japan, games such as Dust: An Elysian Tail is an example of a western game with JRPG elements.
Defining a JRPG is more complicated than you may first imagine. Classic JRPGs often used turn-based combat mechanics, such as the early Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger. As time has gone, JRPGs have further spread into other genres, including platformer, action, MMO, and puzzle.
We may not be able to guarantee a definition for JRPG. Still, we can say that typically they tend to be set heavily in fantasy, with inspiration from Japan and Japanese culture, with a focus on magic, epic adventures, and are often story-driven rather than open-world.
