Battlefield 6 Will Feature Skill-Based Matchmaking, Confirms EA

EA has confirmed that Battlefield 6 will feature skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) at launch. The upcoming FPS is set to release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 10, 2025.

Battlefield 6 Will Feature Skill-Based Matchmaking, Confirms EA

The announcement came from EA during its recent Battlefield 6 multiplayer reveal event, where the company confirmed, via CharlieIntel, that matchmaking will be based, among other things, on ping, skill factor, and players’ location.

Ditching the series’ classic server browser system, BF6 will also give players the choice of crossplay, from full crossplay to platform-specific crossplay, such as PS5-exclusive matchmaking.

What Is Skill-Based Matchmaking and Why Now?

SBMM pairs players with others of a similar level in an attempt to balance teams via performance stats such as K/D ratio and win rate. It’s not a new concept in gaming, and just about every PvP game, from TCGs to battle royales, to MOBAs and fighting games, uses skill-based matchmaking to create a fair and challenging online experience.

In a post on X, BF6 producer Alexia Christofi explained that SBMM will mean more persistent servers and support for low-populated regions. This, while the game’s Portal mode will include a server browser, where players can build a community and choose specific maps and modes, filtering by ping and server population.

Community Reaction and Concerns

So far, the news has caused a division in the community, with one fan responding to CharlieIntel to say they will “pass” after “waiting 10+ years for this game just for them to add SBMM.” Another replied to say that it all “sounds pretty casual” and that they are “up for it.”

Like with any game, some fans welcome the approach towards more balanced matches, while some fear skill-based matchmaking will result in more toxic and “sweaty” matches.

What Else We Know About Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 is being pushed heavily by DICE and EA as a return to the series’ classic roots, focusing on a class-based system and large-scale, highly destructible maps.

EA is holding an open beta weekend from August 7-11 ahead of the first-person shooter’s highly anticipated launch on October 10, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Conclusion

Battlefield 6 will include skill-based matchmaking, after EA confirmed the feature during its multiplayer reveal event. What do you think about the controversial feature? Do you think it makes a difference? Let us know what you think in the comments.
