“The plastic that’s afloat within the oceans isn’t going away by itself. To effectively solve the problem, we need to both turn off the tap and mop the floor at the same time.”
The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation that focuses on cleaning up the oceans. They have developed a system of passive, floating barriers that can be towed out to sea and act as an artificial coastline, catching and concentrating plastic debris before it reaches the shoreline. The idea is that this will reduce the need for manual cleanups – which are costly, labour intensive and often ineffective due to constantly shifting currents.
The Ocean Cleanup has already successfully completed two expeditions: in 2016 they cleaned up 1.5 million pounds of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and in 2018 they completed another expedition collecting an additional 22 metric tons of plastic pollution from various areas of the world’s oceans.
