Survival games are a sub genre of action video games, often set in a hostile, intense open world-world environment, usually placing players in a setting with minimal equipment and forcing them to collect resources, craft tools, weapons and shelter.
Survival games are often designed to be single-player, adding to the intense gameplay as the player attempts to survive alone, but more and more are being released that are multiplayer both in PvE and PvP.
Both single-player and multiplayer games are adopting crafting mechanics, giving another level of immersion as the player characters are often forced to survive weather conditions by building fires or shelter to stay dry and warm, or hunt for their own food so not to starve.
The idea here is to provide the players with another level of challenge and to make characters more believable and easy to connect with from a player point of view.
Though most games won’t offer a winning condition for players, such as in Minecraft and Ark: Survival Evolved, others such as Dead by Daylight and GTFO task the players to adapt to their surroundings quickly and work towards an escape.
