The Coalition is rewriting the rulebook for the Gears of War franchise. Instead of the open-world experiments seen in Gears 5, the upcoming prequel E-Day pulls the camera tight.
Creative Director Matt Searcy recently confirmed to GamesRadar+ that the entire game takes place in a single location: the city of Kalona. This narrative shift aims to capture the immediate, claustrophobic horror of the Locust invasion.

How Gears of War: E-Day Shrinks the Map
Gears 5 sent players across vast ice lakes and deserts. Gears E-Day does the opposite. The story unfolds over consecutive days immediately following Emergence Day.
Searcy explains that condensing the setting allows the team to tell a more intimate story. Players witness the destruction of Kalona in real-time. You see the people, the history, and the sudden loss of life as the Locust horde breaches the surface.
This isn’t just about smaller maps. It is about density. The goal is to make the city feel alive before tearing it apart.

Kalona: The Setting for E-Day
The city isn’t random. It is named after Roman Kalona, a COG founder, giving it deep historical weight within the lore.
Searcy describes the urban environment as the “best gameplay playground” for the series’ signature combat. The dense city streets offer perfect opportunities for intense cover-based shootouts.
Reports indicate the game will leverage advanced Ray Tracing and next-gen destruction physics. Character and environment details are allegedly 100 times higher than in Gears 5, pushing Xbox Series X and PC hardware to their limits.
