Age of Empires (AoE) is the famous real-time strategy game series by Microsoft. The series started in 1997, taking us to the dawn of historical civilizations. With an acclaimed sequel in AoE II: The Age of Kings in 1999, covering the medieval and imperial period. It received a mythology-themed spin-off, Mythology, in 2002. And 3 years later came AoE III, with a colonialism theme.
A series that’s always been loved and has one of the most active communities in the RTS genre. Thanks also to the relaunch of the Definitive Editions and new content with various expansions. Age of Empires – The Incredible New Milestone of 65 Million Players
In a surprise announcement on 30 July 2025, the Xbox team unveiled news about the Age of Empires series. The famous real-time strategy series has hit a fantastic new milestone. It has reached a whopping 65 million players worldwide across its various titles.
The team thanked the community and fans for their support over the years. A new milestone certainly helped by the community’s interest from tournaments, modders, and content creators. But also by the availability of the series on Xbox Game Pass, and the recent debuts of AoE 2 Definitive Edition and AoM Retold on PS5.

Age of Empires: What’s New for the Franchise
While celebrating this fantastic milestone, the team also dropped some news for the rest of 2025. Reminding us of the 2025 updates with the debut of Knights of Cross and Rose (AoE IV) and The Three Kingdoms (AoE II) along with the PS5 launch. The team also confirmed some of the upcoming new features, specifically:
- Age of Mythology: Retold – Heavenly Spear: The new expansion coming on 30 September 2025, bringing Japanese mythology. With a campaign of 12 new missions and a new Pantheon and powers never seen before.
- New Expansions for Age of Empires II and IV: With a new DLC for each game in 2025. Bringing new civilizations, units, and campaigns. More detailed news is on the way.
The team also confirmed the success of Age of Empires Esports in 2025. Congratulating the winners of the S-Tier Tournaments for AoE II (dominated as always by Hera), IV, and Mythology Retold. And finally, announcing the arrival of Age of Empires Mobile with a PC Edition. Which will be playable live at Gamescom 2025.
