Twenty-five years later, Hitman stands stronger than ever — a saga that survived failure, reinvented itself, and became one of gaming’s most respected stealth franchises.
From a Simple Killer to a Cultural Phenomenon
In 2000, a mysterious bald assassin with a barcode on his head and a cold, meticulous stare stepped into gaming history. Agent 47 wasn’t just a character — he became a symbol of creative infiltration and calculated chaos. Christian Elverdam, Chief Creative Officer at IO Interactive, describes it best: “Hitman is everything to us. It’s the IP that founded the company and the one that saved it.”
The franchise’s minimalist design wasn’t just an artistic choice — it was born from technical limits. Early developers couldn’t render realistic hair, so they shaved the protagonist’s head and gave him a barcode, unknowingly crafting one of gaming’s most iconic looks.
Building a New Kind of Assassin
When Hitman: Codename 47 launched in November 2000, it introduced a groundbreaking concept: a “reverse murder mystery.” Players weren’t solving crimes — they were committing them, in style.
The sequel Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2003) perfected the formula, bringing smarter AI and cinematic flair inspired by ‘90s action movies. With Hitman: Blood Money (2006), the franchise cemented its reputation for offering elaborate sandbox missions where creativity ruled.
Each mission became a puzzle of disguises, accidents, and precision kills — from Parisian fashion shows to secret bases in Japan and sunny villas in the Maldives. As Christian Elverdam puts it, “The true star of Hitman is the location.”

Losing Its Identity — Then Finding It Again
By 2012, IO Interactive tried to take Hitman mainstream with Absolution. The result? A loss of identity. The studio admits the mistake: “We started eroding what made the game unique — total freedom,” says Elverdam.
But failure led to reflection. CEO Hakan Abrak recalls: “The secret of Hitman is not explaining everything. You have to let players create their own stories.” This realization led to Hitman (2016) — the start of a new trilogy and a rebirth for the studio.
2016: The Rebirth of a Legend
The 2016 reboot reinvented Hitman as a “live” world of assassination — blending exploration, evolving contracts, and cinematic storytelling. It grew into a trilogy (Hitman 1, 2, and 3), later unified as HITMAN World of Assassination in 2023.
Guest appearances by stars like Sean Bean, Mads Mikkelsen, and Bruce Lee kept the formula fresh. The live-service model transformed Hitman into an ever-evolving experience, selling over 25 million copies worldwide. “Hitman isn’t for everyone — and that’s fine,” says Elverdam. “We focus on what makes us special.”

Looking Ahead: Between 47 and 007
With 007: First Light on the horizon, IO Interactive prepares to introduce another secret agent to its portfolio. But fans needn’t worry — Hitman isn’t going anywhere.
“47 is a perfectionist anti-hero. Bond is an emotional protagonist,” explains Elverdam. “They share DNA, but their souls are different.” The studio now channels the same creative freedom that saved Hitman into its next project. Both agents will coexist — each exploring a distinct side of espionage.
Dr. Selina Tan, played by Gemma Chan, is a brilliant and passionate academic with a background in psychology and game theory, whose role at MI6 is pivotal in Bond’s journey in #007FirstLight.

In Conclusion: A Veteran Who Refuses to Retire
At 25, Hitman continues to surprise, adapt, and thrive. Its ability to evolve without losing its soul is a rare achievement in gaming. Agent 47’s journey — from misunderstood killer to timeless icon — is a reminder that true longevity comes from staying faithful to one’s essence. The bald assassin has aged gracefully, and he’s not ready to hang up his silencer anytime soon.
