Arrowhead Game Studios just dropped a massive hint about the future of the Galactic War in Helldivers 2. Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt recently opened up about features he dreams of adding, including massive squad expansions and open-world mechanics that could completely redefine the game.

Why Helldivers 2 is Making Headlines
To close out the year, Arrowhead hosted a “Democratic Conversation,” giving fans a rare direct line to the developers. During this 30-minute Q&A, Pilestedt didn’t hold back when asked about major features worthy of a potential sequel.
Instead of vague PR answers, he pointed directly to ambitious upgrades that would change the scale of combat. He confirmed that the team is aware of what the community wants, specifically regarding larger team sizes and map interconnectivity.
HD2 Vision: 8-Player Raids and Open Worlds
The most explosive reveal was Pilestedt’s desire for 8-player missions. Currently capped at four, doubling the squad size would drastically alter tactics and chaos levels. But he didn’t stop there.
Pilestedt described a vision for vast, open-world maps where squads could physically cross paths with other teams. Imagine patrolling a sector and stumbling upon another group of Helldivers engaged in a separate firefight.
He emphasized features that highlight the “scale of the conflict.” This includes operations where one team’s success directly impacts another squad in real-time. While these are currently “dream features,” they align with the community’s desire for a more connected warfront.
Stingray Engine Hurdles and New Projects
Implementing this in the current game is tricky. Helldivers 2 runs on the discontinued Stingray engine, which makes massive technical overhauls difficult. Pilestedt hinted that some of these ideas might be reserved for a future iteration or a massive expansion.
Simultaneously, Arrowhead is developing a new co-op action game using Unreal Engine 5. This new IP will feature its own progression and internal economy, separate from the Helldivers universe.
If you haven’t joined the fight for Super Earth yet, now is the time to jump in before the war evolves further.
Verdict: Is the Future Bright for Helldivers?
Pilestedt’s comments confirm that Arrowhead isn’t just maintaining Helldivers 2; they are dreaming big. Whether these features arrive as a massive update or a sequel, the ambition to create a shared, open-world war zone proves the studio understands the potential of their franchise.
Would you survive an 8-player drop, or is the friendly fire chaos with four people already too much to handle?

TO be fair, this is incredible news and really good thoughts on the future. Would love to see more player squads, especially the part where we could also intersect with other squads doing the same operations on the same part of the solar system.
