Remedy Entertainment’s CEO, Tero Virtalo, has confirmed the company is still committed to live-service shooter FBC: Firebreak despite it underperforming on Steam. The three-player co-op FPS launched on June 17, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and its first major update is due in September.

FBC: Firebreak, Remedy’s new FPS set in the Control universe, has failed to meet expectations on Steam, despite having over one million players in its first ten days.
However, Remedy Entertainment’s recent updates that improve gameplay, missions, and the overall player experience have helped player retention. The developer is currently preparing its first major update for September, aimed at improving gunplay, adding a new mission, and introducing new ways to play.
Firebreak’s Slow Start on Steam
Since its release, Firebreak has failed to hold players’ attention, with many complaining of technical issues, a poorly implemented battle pass, boring gameplay, and repetitive missions. Even though updates have addressed many complaints, the game still holds a “Mixed” rating on Steam.
In Remedy Entertainment’s latest financial report, Remedy CEO Tero Virtalo said the company is “unsatisfied with the launch-phase consumer sales of FBC: Firebreak.” He went on to explain that those who used PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass make up “a considerable portion” of the revenue, something that could have resulted in what he describes as “high early player drop-offs and an influx of negative reviews” on Steam.
Remedy’s September Update Plans
In its continued effort to make Firebreak, it’s first self-published title, a success, Virtalo says the company is “committed to continuing to work on FBC: Firebreak, engaging with the community, and expanding the game.” The shooter’s first major update will land for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in September.
The update will provide new players a better introduction through a playable tutorial that will explain the lore and help new players understand who they are and what they will be doing going forward. Additionally, Remedy will be adding three new guns, modifying matchmaking flow, introducing more game modes, increasing mission variety, and releasing a new map.
Can the Update Turn Things Around?
The patches and tweaks made to FBC: Firebreak since its launch have improved the overall experience and Remedy’s determination to support the game with post-launch content and fixes has helped them gain some favor back within the community.

Remedy is a great studio with unique ideas and concepts, I love Control and Alan Wake but live-service stuff is a turn-off for me. I love the FBC: Firebreak setting, seeing more of the Bureau and Objects of Power seems really cool, if some friends are into it as well, I might buy it on sale, otherwise it doesn't really justify a purchase for me.
Remedy was best known for its third-person shooters, Alan Wake, Control, Quantum Break... and shooter gameplay, but not quite on par with Gears of War, mainly because there's a big focus on story, narrative, or alternative skills (survival, powers, etc.). The move to a more traditional game is a nice gamble, but there are too many FPS games, especially on Steam, which is saturated... so they have to release an EXCELLENT game or stand out from the crowd.
