Dragon Quest I & II Remake Confirms No Save Sharing And Switch 2 Upgrade Support

Square Enix has officially confirmed that the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake for Nintendo Switch will not support an upgrade path to the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Adding to the frustration, save data will not carry over or be shared between the two versions. Despite launching on both consoles, the Switch and Switch 2 versions are treated as separate titles, with no cross-save or shared access between them.

Dragon Quest fans in the Nintendo camp have found themselves in a bit of a squabble after reading the game’s FAQs. While the HD-2D Remake is indeed launching for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, the two versions are being treated as entirely separate games.
This means no upgrade path for Switch owners planning to jump to Switch 2, and no save transfer support between platforms. So much so that if a player purchases both versions, each copy will appear individually in their library, as if they were two unrelated titles.

To be clear though, the Switch version will be playable on the Switch 2, as the system is expected to maintain backward compatibility. However, the Switch 2 version will not run on the original Switch, as it will take advantage of hardware features and performance enhancements that the original system can’t support.
While most players understand the playability aspect, the lack of save carryover has sparked backlash. Fans argue that it’s silly that players who want to begin their journey early on current hardware will lose progress if they later decide to upgrade. There should be an incentive to upgrade, isn’t?
Some have also pointed out the inconsistency of this decision. For example, Square Enix previously offered save transfer and upgrade support for the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster, making it unclear why Dragon Quest I & II is being handled differently. As a result, many worry this might signal a new direction for Nintendo’s third-party handling, reminiscent of Sega’s handling of legacy upgrades.
Only time will tell if this becomes a widespread trend for upcoming titles on the next-generation Nintendo platform.
