Gears of War is all about breaking apart the status quo, and the port to PC succeeds masterfully in this endeavor just as the Xbox 360 version did. If you missed-out on the first go around, definitely pick up the PC version for the extra goodies and – mostly – improved controls. It’s the best Halo alternative around, and if you’re looking for something a bit different, you might even find Gears of War to be ultimately superior.
In returning to the game that sparked one of Microsoft’s more prevalent franchises, members of the Coalition kicked down their own proverbial childhood door. The return trip might have revealed a few more cracks than we remembered, but it also serves as a shield for our nostalgia. And as remakes go, that’s worth the journey home.
Gears of War for the PC is a great game and one that is especially well built in many areas, it may be a port for some of the gameplay and levels but it does not feel like one at all. Gears of War for the PC, in my opinion, is definitely one of the top ten first person shooters for 2007.
