Electronic Arts (EA) is reportedly aggressively integrating AI company-wide, forcing developers to use it in every development process. Unfortunately, the new management mandate is also creating friction within the company, with many fearing for their jobs.

EA’s new mandate is creating tensions between employees and management. The company’s push for more generative AI has led developers to use it for generating code, creating artwork, and brainstorming ideas.
The company is encouraging staff to treat its in-house AI chatbot, ReefGPT, as a “thought partner,” according to Business Insider, which spoke with employees.
The Irony of ReefGPT
As the use of AI expands, many companies are looking to it as a way to cut staff and streamline workload. However, many at EA have expressed concerns that they are required to “complete multiple AI training courses” to learn how to use it effectively, which is adding more pressure to their already heavy workload.
Rather than accelerating the creative and development processes, some employees are reporting that ReefGPT produces “flawed code” and so-called “hallucinations,” which they then have to manually repair, increasing their workload further and slowing the process.
Ironically, the forced use of AI is increasing the workload for developers who are already dealing with the notorious “crunch” culture that many large companies impose on their staff.
Training the Replacement: The Job Threat
Creative staff at EA have reported that they are being tasked with training ReefGPT and other AI models using their own work, leading some to suspect they will soon be replaced by a more automated and AI-centered system.
Following a strategic shift at Amazon that has resulted in a greater focus on AI, along with the recent loss of 14,000 jobs, EA developers are also concerned that they are ultimately digging their own graves.
A Widening Chasm in the Industry
EA has long supported the expanded use of AI, and its recent partnership with Stability AI underscores the growing rift in the gaming industry between leaders and development teams. Internal reports reveal that some EA employees have been openly mocking company directors and their emphasis on AI in Slack channels.
Unfortunately, as AI becomes more integrated in our daily lives, companies will also continue to push it more aggressively in pursuit of cost-cutting and accelerating production. Whereas some will view it as a productivity aid, others will view it as a justification for layoffs.
Conclusion
A new report has revealed that many EA employees are fearing layoffs as the company further pushes towards more generative AI and streamlined workflows.
