Surprise Release: Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii joins Game Pass

Goro Majima joins Xbox Game Pass with his latest pirate adventure

Surprise drops are the best kind of drops. Especially when it involves everyone’s favorite “Mad Dog” and a whole lot of pirate chaos.

If you’ve been scrolling through your Xbox dashboard wondering what to play next, stop looking. SEGA just pulled a fast one on us, and it’s a massive win for subscribers.

A Shadow Drop for the Ages

Microsoft didn’t say a word. It wasn’t in the February newsletter, and there wasn’t a big flashy trailer at a showcase last week. But as of today, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is live on Xbox Game Pass.

It’s actually been about a year since Goro Majima first washed up on the shores of Rich Island, confused and shirtless. If you missed the initial launch in early 2025 because your backlog was too full, you’re out of excuses. The game throws the series’ usual rulebook out the window—and then shoots it with a cannon.

You aren’t just roaming the streets of Kamurocho anymore. You’re captaining a ship, fighting off modern-day buccaneers, and trying to figure out why the heck Majima can’t remember who he is.

High Seas and High Kicks

This isn’t a turn-based RPG like Infinite Wealth. We’re back to the raw, bone-crunching action combat the series was built on, but with a salty twist.

You’ve got your classic moves, sure. But the Sea Dog style changes the rhythm completely. You’re mixing dual-wielding cutlasses with firearms and grappling hooks.

It feels fast, frantic, and incredibly satisfying. And yes, there are ship battles. You actually get to upgrade your vessel and take on rival crews in the open water surrounding Madlantis.

The story? It’s pure RGG Studio magic. One minute you’re crying over a heartfelt moment about lost memories, the next you’re delivering pizzas in a Crazy Delivery minigame or racing go-karts. It doesn’t make sense on paper, but when you’re playing it, it’s the only thing that matters.

Verdict: Is It Time to Plunder?

If you have Game Pass, this is a no-brainer. It’s a spin-off, so you don’t necessarily need a PhD in Yakuza lore to enjoy it (though spotting the easter eggs helps). It’s shorter than the massive mainline RPGs, making it a perfect weekend binge.

The combat is snappy, the humor is on point, and frankly, Majima as a pirate captain is the energy we all need right now.

Are you ready to join Majima’s crew, or are you still working through your backlog?
