Smalland competes with Microsoft’s survival game Grounded. It takes all the codes from it, but with its own imprint.

You are a tiny humanoid, in a world populated by insects, batrachians and other arachnids, and you must survive. There is crafting, creature taming (grasshopper, dragonfly, lizard… that you can ride!), needs to be satisfied, a promising season system, fierce fights, because you can imagine that you are not at the top of the food chain! And that’s what makes this kind of game so immersive, in my opinion: you find yourself under the soles of your shoes, in the garden, walking without caring, but when the roles are reversed, that’s what happens! Science fiction, but in a realistic world.

Base building will therefore be in the spotlight and it looks promising. But of course, you don’t have to go it alone: online coop will be available. I’m really looking forward to it, the promises are great, let’s make them happen!

A survival game where you are as small as an ant, which pretty amazingly, is very similar to another highly rated game just released last year: Grounded. Grounded has a much more cartoony style, where this game has graphics that are far more realistic. This game is also much more epic, as grounded is confined to a backyard, where Smalland gives you forests, swamps and ruins. Smalland also has weather and seasons, which makes the environment much more diverse. The characters in Smalland are about three times as big, which gives you more options to use sticks and other materials as weapons and such. Smalland allows you to ride animals, like grasshoppers and dragonflies.

You can play with 10 players in total, in multiplayer, to cooperative survive. You can build encampments and collect amazing armors.

The game will soon be out in early access. It promises a lot, so lets see if they live up to the promises!

Smalland is an upcoming survival action adventure with a lot of features typical of a sandbox experience, much like base building, tons of crafting and customization for your character. It’s been brought by Merge Games a rather small dev team that has brought some really charming and nice games over the years, most notable Spirit of the North.

The initial comparison with Grounded by Obsidian is quite obvious, given the antsized character in a garden filled with bugs and alike, so a lot of criticism will surely be on that front. But first of all the game is going to be released as an early access and seems to be focused more on the social aspects of the game, where Grounded main focus was the mainstory.

Smalland will provide up to 10 player per server, although the servers at launch will only be local/hosted by players which is unfortunate as you’ll not be able to progress it if the host is different or not online. Moreover the developers has confirmed and shown changing of season, with notably winter being present and several features that will stand out more than Grounded. Just like the ability to carry your own base onto different servers, riding animals and even enabling a peaceful mode where animals won’t attack you, thus allowing players to focus on the crafting and building parts and friendly fire if someone wants to create a pvp experience on their servers.
