We Tried Windrose on a Steam Account: Is It Really the Best Pirate Game on PC?

Windrose sold 1 million copies in 3 weeks. 123,000 players are sailing its seas right now. We bought a Steam Account to find out: is it really the best pirate game on PC, or is the hype sailing faster than the game?

Windrose pirate survival hero image

Windrose did not just launch quietly. This article follows the same pattern we used in our PC survival deals ranking: pick a hyped new release, test the cheapest way to buy it, and rank it against the genre’s best. Kraken Express, a previously unknown studio, just delivered a co-op survival experience that has players calling it “the pirate Valheim.” But here at AllKeyShop, we do not just review games: we price them. And the numbers on Windrose tell a story that most outlets are missing.

Summary
  • Windrose via Steam Account: 66% cheaper than buying on Steam
  • CD-key saves just 10%: Steam Account at -66% is the real deal
  • Windrose tops our 8-game pirate ranking as the best PC pirate game
  • Pirates! and Monkey Island: absurd value classics at pocket-change prices

1. Best Pirate Games on PC: Windrose vs the Fleet

Windrose is having its moment, but the pirate genre on PC runs deep. Windrose landed in Early Access on April 14, 2026 and immediately exploded: 123,000 concurrent players, Steam top seller #6, and 1 million copies sold in under 3 weeks. It is a PvE survival adventure set in the Age of Piracy: fight on land and sea, solo or with friends, build and craft across a vast open world, and master soulslite combat that rewards patience. The co-op naval battles are the standout: manning a ship with friends while another crew tries to board you is pure chaos in the best way. Is it perfect? No: Early Access means bugs, and the grind can be real. But at this price point via a Steam Account, it is the best pirate experience on PC right now. Check Windrose deals

Sea of Thieves is the undisputed king of pirate sandboxes. Rare’s live-service pirate adventure has evolved massively since its 2018 launch: the 2026 Edition bundles years of content including Tall Tales campaigns, emissary systems, skeleton forts, and the wildly popular Hourglass PvP mode. With an estimated 5 to 10 million copies sold and a cross-play player base that keeps servers full, it is the gold standard for naval co-op. The keystore price at 15.51EUR is solid, but the Steam Account at 6.40EUR is absurd value for this much content. Check Sea of Thieves deals

Only the Yakuza series could drop a spin-off where Ichiban and crew become literal pirates in Hawaii and make it work. This is not a naval sim: it is a Yakuza game with pirate flavor, featuring over-the-top combat, absurd minigames, and the most heartfelt pirate story you will play this decade. The keystore price at 13.29EUR is already a steal versus the 59.99EUR Steam price. The Steam Account at 20.43EUR is less compelling here: just grab the CD-key. Skull and Bones had a rough launch with ‘AAAA’ pricing at 70EUR and shallow content. But Ubisoft has been rebuilding it with free seasonal updates, world events, and fleet management features. At 7.43EUR on keystores versus 29.99EUR on Steam, the value equation has flipped completely. It is now a genuinely enjoyable naval combat game if you go in expecting ship-to-ship action, not Black Flag 2. No Steam Account variant available here: just grab the CD-key. Ron Gilbert’s long-awaited return to Monkey Island delivered exactly what fans wanted: sharp writing, gorgeous art, and puzzles that respect your intelligence. ATLAS promised the ultimate pirate MMO: thousands of players sharing a massive ocean, building ships, forming companies, and waging war. It delivered mixed results. The launch was plagued by server issues and performance problems, but the core loop of sailing with your crew, discovering islands, and fighting sea monsters is genuinely compelling if you have a group. At 7.18EUR via Steam Account versus 24.99EUR on Steam, it is a low-risk way to see if the pirate MMO dream works for you. Check ATLAS deals

Blackwake is the scrappy multiplayer FPS that understands what pirate gaming is about: two crews on two ships, cannons blazing, with players scrambling to repair holes, load powder, and board the enemy vessel. It is not pretty, and the player count is modest, but at 1.33EUR on keystores you are paying less than a coffee for one of the most intense team-based naval shooters on PC. No Steam Account variant exists: and at this price, you do not need one. Check Blackwake deals

It is 2005. Firaxis releases what is still, two decades later, the most complete pirate game ever made. You sail the Caribbean, trade goods, romance governors’ daughters, duel Spanish galleons, hunt buried treasure, and retire as a legend: or die trying. It plays flawlessly on modern PCs and costs 0.89EUR on keystores. That is less than a euro for one of the best-rated PC games of all time. If you play only one game from this list besides Windrose, make it this one. Check Sid Meier’s Pirates! deals

Also worth watching: Under the Jolly Roger by Trophy Games is a pirate colony builder blending city management, survival, and naval combat. It fills a unique niche no other game on this list touches. However, it is currently available on console only (Nintendo Switch, Xbox) with no PC CD-key presence on AKS, so we cannot include it in our data-backed ranking. If you love management sims with a pirate twist, keep this one on your radar.

2. We Bought Windrose on a Steam Account: Here is What Happened

Instead of paying 26.99EUR on Steam, we went the Steam Account route. The deal: a G2A merchant sells you login credentials for a Steam account that owns Windrose. You log in, download the game, switch to offline mode, and play indefinitely. Price: 9.25EUR with the AKSG2AF4 coupon: that is 66% less than buying directly.

The process took under 5 minutes. The account was fresh: only Windrose in the library. We downloaded the 28 GB install, activated Family Sharing on our main account as a safety net, and were sailing within 30 minutes. The catch? You cannot trade Steam items earned on this account, and you cannot play online on official servers if the account gets reclaimed: though in our experience across dozens of purchases, this has never happened when using the G2A Buyer Protection program. For an in-depth breakdown of what buying a Steam Account actually entails, including the legal grey zone under EU law, read our full investigation: I Bought a Second-Hand Steam Account: Here is What Actually Happened.

For an Early Access title where the experience is mostly co-op PvE with friends, the Steam Account route is the obvious choice. You get the full game, all updates, and you risk almost nothing at the price of a fast-food meal.

3. The Price Verdict: Steam vs CD-Key vs Steam Account

Let us talk numbers. Windrose pricing on May 6, 2026, across the three main purchase channels:

Steam
26.99EUR
Full price, full ownership. The safest route, but you pay full retail for an Early Access title.
Baseline
CD-Key (K4G)
24.35EUR
Only 2.64EUR cheaper than Steam (-10%). With a coupon you stay above 20EUR. Honestly disappointing for a keystore deal.
-10% vs Steam
Steam Account (G2A)
9.25EUR
66% less than Steam. Download, play offline, test the Early Access before committing. The smartest play for a new release.
-66% vs Steam

The CD-key market for Windrose is honestly disappointing. At 24.35EUR: only 10% less than Steam: there is almost no reason to buy a CD-key. The 31 total offers across 9 merchants tell us the supply is healthy, but the discounts are shallow because Windrose is new and demand is sky-high. The best coupon (SUPERDEAL at Gamivo, -18%) helps, but you are still over 20EUR.

This is a case where the Steam Account at 9.25EUR is not just the cheapest option: it is the only option that makes financial sense. A 66% discount turns an “I will wait for a sale” game into an instant purchase. And for an Early Access title where you want to test the waters before committing to a full-price buy later, that is exactly the right move.

4. The Verdict: Is Windrose Worth It?

Yes: but only if you buy it the smart way. Windrose is a genuinely excellent co-op pirate survival game that earns its 87 AKS Score and the 123K concurrent players who are not wrong. The core gameplay loop: build a ship, sail with friends, fight sea monsters, explore islands: is polished beyond what you would expect from a 3-week-old Early Access title. The soulslite combat adds a skill ceiling that keeps encounters tense, and the Kraken Express team has already shipped patches showing they are serious about the roadmap.

The weakness? The grind to upgrade your ship from a raft to a galleon is real, and the procedural island generation can feel repetitive after 20 hours. These are typical Early Access growing pains, not deal-breakers: but they do make the 26.99EUR Steam price harder to swallow. At 9.25EUR via a Steam Account, these flaws become minor footnotes. At 24.35EUR via CD-key, they become frustrating.

So here is our recommendation: buy Windrose via a Steam Account at 9.25EUR. Play it for 20-30 hours, build your ship, fight some sea monsters, and decide if you want to commit when the full release drops. If you love it, you can always buy the Steam version later and transfer nothing: your progress stays on the account. If you do not, you paid less than a movie ticket for one of the most talked-about PC games of 2026.

And if Windrose is not your thing? Scroll back up. Sid Meier’s Pirates! at 0.89EUR, Return to Monkey Island at 0.71EUR, and Blackwake at 1.33EUR are the most fun you can have for less than the price of a baguette. The pirate genre has never been this cheap to explore: Windrose is just the new flagship of a very affordable fleet.

Methodology

This ranking is based on community review scores aggregated from Steam, AKS user ratings, and concurrent player counts sourced live from the Steam API. Prices are fetched in real time from AllKeyShop’s merchant network and reflect the best available deal including coupons at the time of publication (May 6, 2026). Games are ranked by a composite of community reception (weighted 50%), value for money at current AKS prices (30%), and active player base (20%). Only games with a full PC release or Early Access on Steam were included in the ranking. Under the Jolly Roger is mentioned editorially outside the ranking because it fills a unique pirate colony-builder niche, though no PC keystore is available at the time of writing.
