Moonshot Games is halting active development on multiplayer shooter Wildgate just one year after release, but the servers will remain online.
- Active development ending: Moonshot Games confirmed that patch 1.5.4 will be the last major content update for Wildgate, just one year after its launch.
- Servers remain online: Unlike many failed live-service titles, Wildgate’s servers will stay active with a small core team handling basic maintenance and bug fixes.
- No studio layoffs: Game Director Dustin Browder confirmed that the development team is being reassigned to other projects within the studio, avoiding layoffs.
The future of Wildgate has taken a disappointing turn just a year after its release. Developer Moonshot Games has confirmed that active development on the multiplayer shooter is coming to an end, with its upcoming anniversary update serving as the last major patch for the foreseeable future.
Wildgate Fails to Find an Audience
The live-service market has never been an easy place to succeed. Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of multiplayer games shut down despite coming from experienced studios and veteran developers. Unfortunately, Wildgate is the latest title to succumb to this reality.
But unlike the harsher fate of most competing games, Wildgate’s servers will thankfully remain online for the foreseeable future. But according to Moonshot Games, the upcoming one-year anniversary patch will serve as the last major content update, effectively halting active development.
The studio addressed the decision transparently, stating, “Despite all our attempts to bring new and more players into the game, Wildgate hasn’t found a large enough audience to sustain ongoing development.” Since its debut last year, the team tried multiple strategies to expand their reach by discounting the game on various sale events and rolling out consistent improvements to refine the overall experience.
However, the survival of any live-service title hinges on a healthy active player base, and Wildgate’s wasn’t exactly promising. As of writing, SteamDB data shows the game peaked at just 34 players over the last 24 hours. It’s all time high which was over 7k players was still at the time of launch.
Once patch 1.5.4 goes live, Moonshot Games will keep a small core team to oversee basic maintenance so players can still expect bug fixes and balance updates. The studio is also handing over the game’s Discord to the community to manage moving forward.
Game Director Dustin Browder also shared that the studio’s developers will now be moving on to other projects, making it clear that ending active development on Wildgate did not result in layoffs. He added that the team will be on its summer break next week, so communication will be fairly limited for a little while.
Although the game’s future is far more modest than originally planned, players still have one substantial update to look forward to. Patch 1.5.4 will introduce new items, a revamped mode selection system, additional player-controlled game mode options, and continue seasonal events such as Hallowed Beyond and the Winter Festival.
Wildgate originally launched on July 22, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and most recently arrived on Xbox Game Pass last month.
