The Elder Scrolls 6 Release Date Is “Still A Long Way Off,” Admits Todd Howard

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has called for fans to be patient after confirming that The Elder Scrolls 6 is “still a long way off” from launch, with development remaining in its early stages.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Release Date Is

Todd Howard’s admission that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still far away means the RPG is unlikely to launch in 2026, which will make it at least 15 years since the last entry in the franchise, Skyrim, was first released.

Speaking to GQ, to celebrate the release of Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition, Howard says he is “preaching patience” and doesn’t want fans to “feel anxious” about the game.

Bethesda’s Multi-Project Focus: The Real Reason for the Extensive Development Cycle

Bethesda is no stranger to long development cycles, with Skyrim taking three to four years, Fallout 4 around five years, and the company’s recent title, Starfield, approximately eight years, with the company allocating immense resources at each project.

TES6’s development may be taking longer as Howard says that while the game is an “everyday thing,” Bethesda also has “hundreds of people on Fallout” as they work on its MMO, Fallout 76, and “other things.”

Creating a world and a complex game like The Elder Scrolls 6 is a very time-consuming process, and Howard said the release of Starfield gave the audience and the team a break from the franchise after Skyrim, allowing the developers to have a “creative reset” before diving back into TES6.

What “A Long Way Off” Might Mean

While Howard doesn’t offer a new launch year or window, his phrasing and comments suggest that fans should temper their expectations, with a release date realistically looking towards the end of the decade.

Leaks in July revealed the game was “quite playable” as Bethesda was testing it in-house. This, along with Howard admitting he would love the game to “appear” in a shadowdrop like the recent The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered in April, does give some hope that fans may see it in 2026 or 2027.

Hammerfell, High Rock, and The Silence on TES6’s Setting

Despite years of development and an announcement trailer in 2018, Bethesda is keeping the RPG’s settings, gameplay, and Creation Engine 2 enhancements strictly under wraps.

Speculation continues to swirl around fan forums, with popular theories heavily favoring the regions of Hammerfell or High Rock on the continent of Tamriel.

Bethesda Asks for Patience

While Todd Howard urges patience, the confirmation that TES6 is an “everyday thing” is a promising signal that Bethesda Game Studios is fully committed to delivering the ultimate fantasy-world RPG. When do you think The Elder Scrolls 6 will launch? Share your thoughts in the comments!
