The goblin master thief is clawing his way back. Nacon and Cyanide Studio just dropped a massive gameplay reveal for Styx: Blades of Greed, confirming a February 19 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
If you miss the days of Thief or Dishonored, pay attention. This isn’t just a sequel; it’s a shift to a “Metroidvania” structure that punishes you for fighting and rewards you for being a clever little menace.

Why Styx is Shifting to Open Maps
The linear levels of the past are gone. The new campaign revolves around three massive open zones: The Wall (a human fortress), Turquoise Dawn (a vertical orc village), and the Ruins of Akenash.
You aren’t just mission-hopping anymore. Between heists, you manage a Zeppelin hub—giving off serious World of Warcraft vibes—commanding a crew that includes Djarak the dark elf and Helledrin the human pilot.

Blades of Greed Gameplay Details
The source material is clear: do not try to fight. Direct combat is described as “deliberately awkward.” You have to manually draw your dagger, and enemies will kill Styx in two or three hits.
Instead, you rely on the new “Quartz” resource. While Amber powers like Invisibility return, Quartz introduces aggressive chaos like Mind Control and Time Shift.
The physics engine adds some unintentional comedy. Miss a jump? Styx “flops around like a ragdoll.” However, nailing a stealth kill remains satisfying, described as having a “brutal elegance” as you end foes with a quick throat stab.
Crafting is mandatory. You need to scavenge iron and cloth to build acid traps (which dissolve bodies instantly) or glass bottles to distract guards.
The Sequel’s Technical State
We have to be honest about the preview data: the AI currently struggles. Reports mention guards watching their friends die, then simply turning around to stare at a door.
There is also mention of “janky” climbing animations and input latency, though some of this was attributed to cloud streaming issues during the preview event.
Verdict: A Gem for Purists?
Styx: Blades of Greed is shaping up to be a 20-hour campaign for offering a deep, methodical stealth mechanics without the $70 AAA price tag bloat.
If you can forgive some “Eurojank” animation and inconsistent AI, the verticality and specialized goblin tools look like a treat for genre veterans.
Does the shift to a Metroidvania structure make you more interested, or do you prefer linear stealth missions?
