Sony is shutting down Bluepoint Games in March, impacting 70 staff after a cancelled God of War project and industry challenges.
Sony has confirmed another major shake-up within its first-party lineup. The closure of Bluepoint Games marks the end of a studio associated with some of PlayStation’s most celebrated remakes. While the team had been quiet in recent years, it wasn’t absent from headlines. A cancelled God of War live-service project, shifting internal plans, and mounting industry pressures ultimately led to this incident.
PlayStation Studio Bluepoint Games Shutting Down in March
Although Bluepoint Games hasn’t released a title since 2020, it wasn’t that long ago that the studio found itself in the news cycle. The team had been developing a live-service God of War project for Sony which unfortunately was cancelled in 2025. Following that cancellation, Bluepoint and Sony were reportedly working together to determine the studio’s next direction. Those plans, however, never materialized into a new project.
Sony has now confirmed that Bluepoint Games will shut down in March. The studio, which was acquired by Sony in 2021, currently employs around 70 staff members who will be affected by the closure. PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst stated that Sony may attempt to reassign some employees to other PlayStation teams where possible.
Hulst explained that the decision stems from “rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds.” His comments reflect the challenges currently impacting the gaming industry as a whole, where even established teams are not immune to restructuring, and in this case, a shutdown.

Founded in 2006, the studio built its reputation on delivering high-quality titles and even remakes. Among its most notable works are 2015’s Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, 2018’s Shadow of the Colossus, and 2020’s Demon’s Souls.
It’s difficult not to view this moment as symbolic of a larger industry shift. As Hulst noted, development costs are rising while growth has slowed and player habits continue to evolve. Studios are adapting in every direction possible, and yet the consequences often land hardest on the people behind the games.
In an industry fueled by creativity and passion, it is too often the employees, the backbone of game development, who bear the weight of these transitions.
