The PS5 Is Ditching the Crunchyroll App for a Massive Spring 2027 Home Screen Update
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll will launch a dedicated PlayStation 5 Crunchyroll Anime Hub in Spring 2027. This system update integrates anime streaming directly into the console dashboard.
Key Takeaways
- Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll are launching a native Anime Hub embedded directly into the PlayStation 5 home screen in Spring 2027.
- The update removes the need to open an isolated media application, surfacing streaming shows and anime video games side-by-side.
- The system software update includes automated viewing history tracking and cross-media recommendations on the main console interface.
Sony Interactive Entertainment confirms the PlayStation 5 will receive an integrated anime hub directly on its home screen in Spring 2027.
Sony confirmed the new hub during the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, outlining a strategy to surface streaming shows directly alongside anime-inspired video games.
Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini stated: “Today, we take that partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment one step further with an anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they already are.”
How Will the Crunchyroll Anime Hub Work on PS5?
The new Anime Hub integrates anime streaming directly into the PlayStation 5 operating system. Players will browse shows, manage watchlists, and launch content immediately from the console’s main dashboard.
The hub places anime-inspired video games and streaming series side-by-side on the PlayStation 5 home screen, as detailed in a recent Crunchyroll press release.
Additionally, PlayStation 5 will track user viewing history and suggest related titles without requiring active navigation through separate menus.
What is the Difference Between the Current App and the 2027 Hub Integration?
The current model requires PS5 owners to navigate the Media tab and launch an isolated application. The Spring 2027 update embeds the entire Crunchyroll library directly into the core user interface alongside relevant video games.
Sony and Crunchyroll continue to blur the lines between passive viewing and interactive entertainment. The 2027 update fundamentally changes how the PlayStation 5 handles third-party media delivery.
Crunchyroll executives emphasize that the structural shift prioritizes user convenience and immediate access above all else.
Final Details and Expected Impact
The upcoming Anime Hub solidifies the corporate synergy between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll. The integration transforms the PS5 into a unified multimedia device tailored for a highly specific demographic.
Sony and Crunchyroll have confirmed that the system update will roll out globally to all PlayStation 5 consoles in Spring 2027.
