Summary

What is Dragon’s Dogma 2?

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a vast Open World Action RPG. This single-player game is set in a medieval environment, bringing a world full of magic and mythical creatures. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the successor to the very popular Dragon: Dark Arisen, which was released in 2016. All battles in Dragon’s Dogma 2 are challenging and could end your life or that of one of your companions. In a group of up to 4 characters, you embark on a journey to fulfill your missions. However, behind every corner, a new epic monster could be waiting for you, which you must defeat.

Dragon’s Dogma Games

So far, there are only two Dragon’s Dogma games. Once Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Dragon’s Dogma was released on May 25th for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game enjoyed high popularity and received the Dark Arisen expansion in 2013. This expansion introduced a new side mission into the game, which takes about 15 hours to complete. Then, a few years later, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, which is the base game with DLC, was released for PC on January 15, 2016. On October 3, 2017, a port to the new console generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released. Lastly, in April 2019, it was released for the Nintendo Switch.

Dragon's Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is a single-player open-world game. The player is given a lot of freedom. You can freely choose your class and companions and do the tasks you feel like doing. However, there is a main task that you must complete to finish the game. Nevertheless, there is endless exploration and plenty of side missions that can distract you from your path.

The successor Dragon’s Dogma 2 was released just a few weeks ago on March 22nd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Again, this is a single-player open-world game. This game is very similar to its predecessor in terms of gameplay, but many improvements have been made. Like its predecessor, this game is set in a medieval setting.

Dragon's Dogma 2

In Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, you initially play as the male character Savan, who moves through tunnels towards a temple. After completing the battle against a Chimera, you proceed through a door and encounter an unknown beast, a Lindwurm, ultimately a dragon. This creature reappears many years later in the world of Gransys. From here, you play a new character, where you can choose your gender. You attempt to confront this overpowering opponent but unfortunately without success.

To seek help from the king, you now travel to the capital, Gran Soren. But to receive an audience, you must first complete some tasks in the capital. After you have had an audience with the king, you officially become part of the Lindwurm Hunt, which aims to defeat the creature. Along the way, you experience more adventures and side quests before ultimately facing off against the dragon Grigori as the grand finale.

Story of Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 starts in a dungeon, where you can still hear the voice of the long-forgotten dragon echoing. “Rise, Arisen, and defeat me” you can hear, thus clarifying your task right at the beginning of the game. Defeat the dragon. But the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is vast, and it’s easy to get lost in almost endless side missions. Often, you have to defeat dangerous enemies or fulfill other tasks for people you meet. There are three different endings to Dragon’s Dogma 2, including the Bad Ending, the Normal Ending, and the True Ending.

In the Bad Ending, you surrender your favorite person to the dragon and do not attack it. In the normal ending, you defeat the dragon and ultimately take the place of the rightful heir to the throne. The true ending involves breaking the Eternal Cycle between Arisen and Dragons and unlocking the Godless World.

Development of Game Mechanics

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and Dragon’s Dogma 2 differ in terms of their game mechanics, as mentioned earlier, relatively little. One of the core mechanics that is unique to Dragon’s Dogma is climbing on enemies. If you manage to climb on the back of your opponents during battle, you can target their weak points. This would often not be possible without climbing on many opponents. This applies, of course, only to large opponents.

Another feature of the Dragon’s Dogma games is your Pawns. In total, you travel in a group of 4 people. Yourself, a Pawn that you create yourself, and two Pawns created by other players or in offline mode by AI. All Pawns come from a different dimension and can be summoned at certain stones. These Pawns all have different classes and weaknesses, which we will discuss in more detail shortly. You should always try to compensate for your own weaknesses through your Pawns. For example, if you play as a mage, you definitely need someone to fight for you at the front line.

In Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, there were three different starting classes: Fighter, Mage, and Strider. These classes then develop into the advanced classes: Warrior, Sorcerer, and Ranger. Additionally, there are hybrid classes: Assassin, Mystic Knight, and Magick Archer. These classes have a slightly reduced focus on one class and instead share skills of two different classes. All classes have their own advantages and disadvantages, which you should balance by assembling a good team.

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, there are four different starting classes: Fighter, Archer, Thief, and Mage. Additionally, there are the advanced classes Warrior and Sorcerer. Then there are additional paths that are only possible for the Arisen, the player, namely: Magic Archer, Mystic Blade, Illusionist, and Warlord. The Warlord can learn skills from any class and is thus the perfect all-rounder who can intervene and react in any situation.

Additionally, in Dragon’s Dogma 2, there is the Path Master. You can meet these Path Masters in the world and become friends with them. Once you have gained their trust, you can attain the Master’s Teachings, through which you acquire abilities of the highest power.

Criticism of Dragon’s Dogma 2

Upon release, Dragon’s Dogma 2 was criticized by many and received poor reviews. But what was the reason for this? The point that most players find upsetting is that this full-priced title includes microtransactions. Through these, you can give yourself in-game items for real money, such as hiring new people, buying items in the shop, reviving the dead, and much more. This is by far the biggest reason for the poor rating, with only 59% of reviews on Steam being positive for this game.

Additionally, some of the gameplay factors are still quite poor. For example, you can only have one save file so far and only unlock your first abode late in the game, and much more. But the developers have announced that they intend to address these issues. You can find more details about this here.

In summary: The negative reviews of Dragon’s Dogma 2 are not due to the poor gameplay of the game, but mostly due to the understandable outrage over the microtransactions. Optimization is also not perfect yet, but everything will be improved over time. The fewest negative reviews refer to the gameplay.

Great Success of the Dragon’s Dogma Series

But despite the major criticism, the Dragon’s Dogma franchise celebrated a big success a few days ago. Dragon’s Dogma 2 was sold 2.5 million times. But that’s not the only success the franchise has achieved. With the 2.5 million sales, the total sales of the Dragon’s Dogma games reached 10 million. And that is truly something to celebrate.

What’s Coming in the Future?

First, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be patched. Essential features and settings will be added, and then the game will be further optimized. But it probably won’t stop there. We can expect DLCs, as with the predecessor, which will integrate new side missions and much more into the game.
