Ubisoft confirms the next Ghost Recon will be a first-person shooter

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (GR) is the famous military tactical game series from Ubisoft. The series started in 2001, following the fictional U.S. Army Special Forces unit. Through various missions around the world with an initially contemporary setting. But then it went futuristic starting with Advanced Warfighter (2006).

With 2017’s Wildlands getting good feedback and seeing a return to the contemporary setting. But 2019’s Breakpoint was a disaster. Heavily criticized for its many poorly designed mechanics and excessive microtransactions. This led to the cancellation of Frontline, the series’ F2P title. A new Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon is Confirmed to be in Development

Almost 6 years after the launch of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, it seems there’s finally some movement from Ubisoft. The third-person military tactical shooter series has been pretty much on hold since 2019, after the cancellation of Frontline, the F2P PvP title. With new info coming directly from the recent investor meeting on July 10, 2025.

News that was shared on July 18 by Stephen Totilo of Game File. During the meeting, it seems Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, confirmed a new Ghost Recon is in development among the company’s lineups. But CFO Frederick Duguet mentioned the game as a first-person shooter, and the continued reliance on the live-service model.

What do we know so far about the new Ghost Recon?

Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming had already shared some details about the new GR. Specifically, it seems the title is internally called Project Ovr. And it is indeed a new installment in the main series. Offering a first-person experience in the style of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, with a dash of Ready or Not.

The game is expected to launch in 2026, potentially for the series’ 25th Anniversary. This news is getting very mixed signals from many fans. Particularly Ubisoft’s choice to return to a first-person view. Plus, they’re sticking to the Live-Service model, even though it already led to the early cancellation of the battle royale Frontline.

In Conclusion

It looks like Ubisoft is doubling down once again on a live-service experience. With the next Ghost Recon apparently going back to first-person, even though the third-person view has built a huge fanbase over the years. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of experience the team wants to deliver. So what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments!
