Microsoft hasn’t climbed out of hot water since its wave of massive layoffs and judging by recent events, it’s not getting out anytime soon. The gaming community is still reeling from the loss of hundreds of jobs, the abrupt shutdown of entire studios, and the cancellation of multiple in-progress games. Amid this devastation, Xbox has started sending out invitations to third-party developers, inviting them to participate in an AI roundtable at Gamescom 2025.

According to reports, Necrosoft Games director Brandon Sheffield was one of the developers who received an email from Microsoft and ID@Xbox. The email invited him to a roundtable discussion at Gamescom 2025 focused on AI, specifically, to share feedback on how developers would like to see AI used in tools and processes to “make the game development and publishing experience more efficient.”
And while Microsoft may have intended this in good faith, it was, in many eyes, a tone-deaf move. The sting of job losses tied to “AI investments” is still fresh for many, and here comes Xbox asking for input on how to use that same technology to streamline development.

The timing of this invite is what’s fueling the backlash. Microsoft had just laid off thousands of employees across several divisions including its Xbox gaming arm. Entire studios were shut down including long-standing teams with active projects. The company’s cuts are part of a restructuring effort meant to fuel Microsoft’s growing investment in AI infrastructure.
While some developers and fans were outraged, others understood the logic even if it hurt. AI is the future. Every major tech company is racing to dominate the space, and Microsoft is one of the frontrunners. To compete, it needs to redirect resources, unfortunately, even at the cost of creativity, jobs, and games.
Some observers have also argued that automation itself isn’t the direct cause of the job losses, it’s the broader restructuring of Microsoft’s priorities. And in that restructuring, video games appear to be taking a back seat, at least for now.
