#1: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Tragic fantasy about death and a cursed world

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did not win almost every award at The Game Awards 2025 for nothing. The game is a dark fantasy RPG set in a world inspired by the Belle Époque. Every year, the so called Paintress writes a number on the monolith on the continent and all people of a certain age are erased. This number becomes one smaller every year and the story takes place in the year when the Paintress writes 33. Every year an expedition is sent to stop the Paintress. You are part of Expedition 33, which wants to change the fate of the world.

The focus of the game lies on character drama and the personal stories of the expedition members. Themes like mortality, hope, and sacrifice play a major role. The world is very atmospheric and full of emotional dialogue and cinematic presentation. It also looks incredibly beautiful with a colorful palette. The tragic core idea makes the narrative feel especially intense. The combat in the game is tactical turn based with quick time events.

#2: NieR Automata – Existential sci fi about androids and the meaning of life

Next at number 2 is NieR Automata. This game is a sci fi action RPG about a war between androids, humanity, and machines on Earth. You take the role of androids like 2B, 9S, and A2. Your mission seems clear: defeat the machines and reclaim Earth. However, as the story progresses, the characters and maybe even you start to question the true purpose of this war.

NieR Automata tells its story through multiple playthroughs with different perspectives. Themes like existence, consciousness, and the meaning of life are at the center of the story. The game includes many story moments that are intentionally tragic and melancholic. Especially the final ending is considered by many players to be one of the most emotional moments in gaming.

#3: Undertale – Indie RPG about morality, choices, and compassion

In Undertale you take the role of a child who falls into an underground world full of monsters. Instead of classic RPG fights, you can also simply talk to enemies and convince them to spare you. Every decision influences your relationships with characters and the course of the story. This makes every encounter feel more personal and morally meaningful. The combat is also very unique, because whenever an enemy attacks you, you must dodge with your heart inside a small box, a mechanic that is both unique and very fun.

The game questions typical RPG mechanics such as violence and leveling. In addition, there are multiple endings that show completely different sides of the story. Especially the so called Genocide Run strongly confronts players with their decisions. These mechanics are exactly what make Undertale one of the most emotionally memorable indie RPGs of all time and it is definitely worth playing.
