Playstation 6 Reported To Continue Detachable Disc Option, Safeguarding Physical Disc Future

PlayStation 6 will reportedly keep the detachable disc drive, ensuring continued support for physical game discs in the next generation.

No matter what people say, there is a growing concern over the future of physical discs still being available for future video games. In an effort to reduce costs, the industry actually has more digital products. Even some physical boxes only contain a download code now.

And then Sony released the Playstation 5 digital console which further worried gamers. While we can deduce what the end goal is, this discussion has moved further down the line as Playstation 6 is reported to still have disc support when it launches.

Playstation 6 Will Have a Detachable Disc Drive Option At Launch

While there’s no official word on it, Insider Gaming was able to gather some information regarding Playstation 6, specifically that Sony plans to launch the next-gen console with a detachable disc option. Just a brief background, they were also the ones who exclusively reported on the PS5 version so it’s safe to say that there is credibility to it.

This detachable disc model was first implemented for Playstation 5 which aimed to not only reduce shipping and production cost, but offer a “cheaper” version of the console. According to the report, this model “hit all the company’s internal targets” and so unless something changes at the last minute, it will be implemented for Playstation 6 as well.

Like its predecessor, it will be offered as a traditional console, a digital console, and an option to upgrade with a detachable disc drive. Although this move seems to inch towards eventually just having a digital console option, gamers also see the advantages of it.

Say if anything breaks, it’s easier and cheaper to just replace the drive instead of buying a whole new one. It rarely happens, but it happens. It will also be interesting to know that when the next console comes out, can PS5 users who already own a detachable disc drive, use it for PS6.

Having the disc drive isn’t just for nostalgia’s sake, but also, at some point, for game preservation too. We’ll have it for the next one but a lingering question remains: until when?
