Grab your EMF readers and Spirit Boxes, because the eternal Early Access hunt is finally ending. Kinetic Games just dropped massive news for everyone’s favorite co-op horror hit.
After six years of terrified screaming in the dark, Phasmophobia is officially hitting Version 1.0 in 2026. But the biggest shocker? It’s launching on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Road to 1.0 and Next-Gen Portability
It feels like we’ve been investigating haunted houses in Early Access forever. Since its explosion onto the scene in 2020, Phasmophobia has defined the genre.
But it always had that “work in progress” tag attached to it. That changes next year. Kinetic Games confirmed that 2026 is the year they cross the finish line.
The roadmap is aggressive. Aside from the full V1.0 release, the team is porting the game to the successor of the Nintendo Switch. Seeing Nintendo Switch 2 officially mentioned in a dev roadmap is huge. It confirms that ghost hunting will be fully portable on next-gen hardware.
They are also moving the game to the Unity 6 engine. This means better performance, lighting, and crucially, much more stable netcode for those chaotic multiplayer sessions.

Character Overhauls: Looking Good While Dying
One of the most requested changes is finally arriving early in the year: the Player Character Update. Let’s be honest, the current character models are a bit… stiff. Kinetic is bringing in fully customizable investigators, meaning you won’t look like a generic clone anymore.
They are also reworking animations from the ground up. This includes new interaction animations and, morbidly, completely new death animations. Getting caught by a Revenant is about to look a lot more painful.
Here is what else is on the docket for 2026:
- Map Reworks: Both 6 Tanglewood Drive and 13 Willow Street are getting visual and layout updates. Tanglewood is even getting a hidden mystery for players to solve.
- New Locations: A completely new map is coming, following up on Nell’s Diner.
- Events: A brand new limited-time event is scheduled, alongside returning favorites
Verdict: Time to Return to the Van?
If you haven’t played since the early viral days of 2020, you’re missing out on a much deeper, scarier game. With the move to Unity 6, a console generation leap, and the final polish of Version 1.0, 2026 looks like the perfect time to get the squad back together.
