Mojang just activated a massive community event to start 2026 in Minecraft. Players across the globe must unite to mine billions of blocks and defeat mobs right now to unlock exclusive Character Creator items.
The deadlines are tight, and the block counts are astronomical. Here is everything you need to know to secure your rewards before the event ends next week.
The Minecraft Community Challenge
The developers aren’t playing around with this year’s opener challenge. From Wednesday, January 7 (already live!) to Monday, January 12, the community faces two distinct tasks.
First, players must collectively mine 4.25 billion stone blocks. This isn’t a typo. Hitting this global milestone unlocks the Victor’s Coat Character Creator item. It is time to strip-mine those chunks you’ve been ignoring.
Simultaneously, the combat-focused players have work to do. The second goal requires the community to defeat 1.75 billion mobs. Success here grants the Victor’s Laurel Wings. Combining both items creates a “winner” aesthetic perfect for showing off in multiplayer lobbies.
Thank you for another great year of Minecraft! You rode happy ghasts, summoned an ARMY of copper golems (to organize your chests of course), hung out with new mob variants and speared the competition atop a nautilus. Here's to you!

Free Marketplace Loot
After the grind, you can grab some free loot. On Friday, January 9, the “Mounts of Mayhem: Dungeon Descent” add-on hits the Minecraft Marketplace for zero cost.
This add-on introduces unique charms and a custom saddle block. These new tools allow you to add particle trails to your mounts, adding a bit of flair to your travel. It serves as a nice palette cleanser after mining billions of cobblestones.
2026 Update: Baby Mobs Redesigned
Mojang also just revealed the first “game drop” of 2026. This update completely overhauls the visuals for baby farm mobs. You can test these features now in the Java snapshot and Bedrock beta.
The “shrink ray” approach is gone. Baby mobs now feature unique models with one-pixel eyes, distinguishing them from the standard two-pixel adult eyes. This makes kittens, piglets, and wolf pups look more like plush toys and less like scaled-down clones.
Audio Designer Sandra Karlsson also recorded real animal sounds for this update. When a piglet squeals in-game, you are now hearing a high-fidelity recording of a real piglet, not just a pitch-shifted adult sound.

New Survival Crafting Recipes
Perhaps the most practical change in this update involves Name Tags. For years, survival players relied on RNG dungeon loot or fishing to find them.
Mojang finally fixed this. You can now craft Name Tags directly using Paper and any Metal Nugget (Iron, Gold, etc.). This simple recipe allows you to organize and protect your pets immediately after starting a new world.
Verdict: A Strong Start for Minecraft 2026
The clock is already ticking on the global challenge. With only a few days to mine over 4 billion blocks, the community needs every pickaxe swinging. The combination of immediate rewards and the adorable visual overhaul makes this a strong start for the year.
Are you focusing on the stone mining challenge, or are you heading out to hunt 1.75 billion mobs?
