Cyberpunk 2 Confirmed And Has Entered Pre-production Phase
CD Projekt renames Project Orion to Cyberpunk 2 as the game enters pre-production; next chapter in the Cyberpunk universe is underway.
A Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, originally codenamed Project Orion, was officially announced back in 2022 as part of CD Projekt’s long-term roadmap. Since then, the studio has kept investors in the loop with steady updates on its progress. In March 2025, CD Projekt revealed that Project Orion was nearing the end of its concept phase and would be transitioning into pre-production “in the coming weeks.” And now, we are here.
After years of speculation, initial planning, and behind-the-scenes groundwork, the next major installment in the Cyberpunk universe is officially in development.
Cyberpunk 2 Announced, Enters Pre-production Phase
In a recent announcement shared via CD Projekt’s official X account, the developer confirmed that Cyberpunk 2 has officially entered its pre-production phase. While the game had been referred to internally as Project Orion, the studio is now publicly calling it Cyberpunk 2. However, this title isn’t final.
CD Projekt made it clear that Cyberpunk 2 is simply a placeholder, a shorthand for “another game in the Cyberpunk universe.” Notably, the wording used avoids calling it a direct sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which could mean the upcoming title may chart a different path, maybe introducing new characters, narratives, or even time periods within the same world.
This careful phrasing leaves plenty of room for speculation. It could be a continuation of 2077’s themes, or an entirely new story built on the same universe and systems. Regardless of where it leads, expectations are high given the massive turnaround Cyberpunk 2077 achieved post-launch with updates and the Phantom Liberty expansion.

CD Projekt is also heavily invested in developing The Witcher 4. The studio is clearly scaling up production across its two biggest franchises, setting the stage for an exciting next generation of RPGs.
Given the early stage of development, it may take anywhere from three to five years before Cyberpunk 2 is ready for release.
