About Total War: Attila

Total War: ATTILA is a turn-based-strategy with RTS elements developed by Creative Assembly. The year is 395 AD, and Europe is suffering from famine, disease, and war. A new power is rising in the great steppes of the East, with a million men on horseback at his beck and call, and his sights are set on conquering Rome. How far will you go to survive?

  • You are now able to use fire in the battlefield, set buildings ablaze and terrify defenders, or wipe entire cities and regions from the face of the campaign map with the new raze mechanic.
  • As the Western Roman Empire, you will start with your territories under your control, but weakened by political infighting and threatened on all sides by enemies, you will soon have to fight just to survive.
  • Improved gameplay and UI mechanics, including politics, family tree, civic management, and technological progression from previous Total War games.
  • This iteration brings with it new period-specific technologies, arms and armaments, religion, cultures, and social upheaval.

Total War: Attila Reviews

For the uninitiated, Total War: Attila does a good enough job introducing a very detailed world and mechanics. What it does best is allow a player to get right into the meat of combat and enjoy orchestrating campaigns across gorgeous battlefields. While micromanaging the war effort and empire can be distracting, there are enough game modes and variety in the campaign to wean someone into the thick of it. At the end of the day, the battles are satisfying, and the AI is good enough. It is not without its problems, but it’s as good a strategy game as you’ll likely find.

Gaming Nexus

Will there be day one, week one, or even month one patches? Sure, this is the new normal, and something to be expected. But Total War: Attila shouldn’t be dismissed based on the fact that at certain points it’s prone to freeze and look like it’s crashed, only to unfreeze and continue on like nothing’s happened at all. The time-period, focused campaign, new migration aspects, fleshed-out political intrigue, and consistently grand battles make this feel like a Total War game aimed squarely at fans of the series.

Ausgamers

For a period piece game that focuses on the terror and turmoil raised by the Huns and Barbarian Hordes, it would be a slap in the face to charge me for some realistic blood, but happily let me watch my enemies’ burn to cinders from an overabundance of fire arrows to the knee.

Not the best Total War product. It feels more a survival than a strategy game.

I wonder how it differs from Shogun 2 in terms of layout and campaign structure.
