Port Royale 3 is a naval-themed, economy trading sim developed by Gaming Minds Studios. In the turbulent 17th century, the colonial empire of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands fight over territories. Step into the shoes of a young sea captain whose only goal is to become the most powerful man in the New World in order to achieve that goal. Pick from two campaigns: an Adventurer or a Trader?

• Choosing the path of the Adventurer will lead you on an unforgiving conquest of the seas: invasion, piracy, bounty hunting, raiding do whatever it takes to build your own empire in the Caribbean.
• Choosing the path of the Trader, you will mostly be developing your riches and your economic power. Create trade routes, build industries and develop the economy of the colonies to be the most powerful Trader of the New World.
• In freeplay mode mix both of these playstyles in any way you want, letting you create your own unique story.
• Experience multiplayer mode for the first time in the series allowing up to four players to play through LAN or over the Internet. Develop a successful trading company, lead ships in naval battles, and force your opponents to their knees!

The saddest part of all this is that Port Royale 3 looks good and plays smoothly. It also, at least in theory, has a lot of facets: trading, ship-to-ship combat, ship-to-shore combat, two separate story campaigns, and multiplayer. But none of these offer anything that’s much fun to do.

Port Royale 3 is not a bad game, not by any means, and I’d say on the whole it does a better job of things than Patrician IV did – it’s still not fantastic though. Definitely one to pick up cheap if you can find it, but still worth picking up all the same.
