Thanks to its appreciation of old and new, The Settlers: Rise of an Empire has a lot to offer both longtime franchise followers and newcomers who wouldn’t know a serf from a surfboard. It could sure use another patch or two or three to address some bugs, but this effort still does an impressive job of moving the Settlers series closer to the big leagues.
Despite being the best game in the series because of some lovely visuals and good gameplay enhancements, The Settlers: Rise of an Empire still manages to screw enough things up to be aggravating. The game is decent to be sure and borders on being a truly good game, but a lack of trade and diplomatic functionality are absolutely frustrating on top of a very basic combat design that isn’t good enough for the amount of combat forced upon players. The huge problem, of course, is the save and crash bugs that can keep you from finishing some of the long missions. If you’re willing to deal with the bugs and like charming town-building games like this one, it’s worth a try. We at least recommend giving the demo a look.
The Settlers: Rise of an Empire has a rather lighthearted look and feel to it. The graphics are a combination of art and cartoon. There’s lots of detail on the map and in the buildings. The characters look like caricatures. The voiceovers are also playful, although things can get pretty intense at times. Even the soundtrack is fitting. It’s lighthearted, haunting, soothing, and frenetic. It’s too bad that this game is plagued by poor mechanics. The production values are there, but they just can’t seem to rise above the glitches. The good news is that this is a PC game and there is hope for it yet. Hopefully some new patches will surface to make this game more playable.
