There are quite a few games about colonizing planets and managing resources, but new titles keep appearing. It's clear that this is an interesting theme, so many developers are bringing their own vision and aspects to the genre. Recently released in early access, Occupy Mars: The Game is another approach to open world survival. Expectations were quite high, as the free prologue looked promising and had received a good number of positive reviews. In this game you can craft, build, farm, explore... in short, do everything that sandboxes are known for. On the other hand, the game still has some major flaws, not to mention the numerous bugs that prevent you from fully enjoying the game. Also, it gives the impression of being harder than it is, but that's not because it's too challenging, no. It's tough because of clunky controls, poor balance and other unpopular gameplay decisions. Overall, I think this game has potential, but needs a lot of work before it can leave the early access stage.

Occupy Mars: The Game is a yet another survival game based on the beloved colonization and exploration of the Red Planet, Mars. Developed by Pyramid Games, a rather small studio that has already published a few sim/sandbox titles with mixed results and not enough attention, the team has now decided to release this title as an Early Access title, after showing a glimpse of the game in 2020 with a Prologue. The game will start with the usual character creation, and we'll find ourselves in a pre-created base along with other, mostly useless, NPCs. Here we'll take the tutorial, starting one in a VR environment explaining basic movement and interaction stuff, and then following the classic construction, resource harvesting, fixing stuff and other miscellaneous fetch quests, up until we assist into a rocket explosion that wreck the base, and thus with the objective to survive and escape we'll soon reach our safety pod, ready to be ejected from the place and relocate into a safe place. This is finally were the game start, with our safety pod serving and the main base location thanks to it being packed with the essentials to start, from the oxygen tank, materials and a crafting 3d tool. Thus it beings our survival into the harsh environment of the planet, with us trying to survive and develop and unlock new techs to ease our life, initially by allowing us to survive and later expanding the scope with new stuff to build and research. The various atmospheric events, such as cold, storms and even meteor shower will also have an effect on our typical survival elements to keep in check, the classic hunger, thirst, health and stamina, Moreover exploration is surely hindered by the absence of lights during the first few days, making hard to make out where we exactly are even using the built-in torchlight. As an early access title, the game has the typical bugs and problems you'd expect, probably more than usual, with bad system resource management which make things a bit harder to run smoothly despite the mediocre level of visual fidelity, with very bland textures and geometry, which ends up in a more functional and okay state. On top of that there are a pletora of bugs, which will make things harder to progress, sometimes dying from small jumps getting stuck, not being able to interact etc. Although it has a save system to kinda help resolve with those, the lack of checkpoints and a bit long loading and saving time, does have an impact on the overall experience even if you aren't bothered too much from the issues mentioned above. With a bit overpriced pricetag of 24,50€, which could easily double with the official release and more if the team intends to add DLC, it's a bit hard to recommend it in this state. Although the game has a decent core which lacks polish, not only performance wise but also with certain decision, as I believe most of the people will have a wrong idea of the game with how long and tedious is the tutorial, which is a shame because after that the game opens up to a rather decent Sandbox experience. I'd suggest to wait a few months and checking the update and contents, and maybe pick it up at 15€, especially if you've liked what you could see in the Free "Occupy Mars: Prologue (2020)"

Occupy Mars is a space survival and management game. There's a campaign mode but it's still in very early access so the strength of the game lies in it's sandbox mode at the moment. The goal of the game is to colonize Mars by building a base, upgrading it and gathering resources. Players can build greenhouses to produce oxygen and harvest crops and explore the planet to search for minerals and water. Problems and equipment failures may occur that require quick fixes before they become a catastrophe. According to reviews the game has some serious bugs that require reloading to a previous checkpoint or save but it's still in early access and the developers are actively working on fixing the game and releasing patches.
