About Mad Devils: Damned-finitive Edition (Mad Devils)

Mad Devils is a retro co-op arcade shooter set in a twisted World War II setting, developed by Itzy Interactive Inc. In the final days of the war the desperate Nazi war machine embraces the occult, the maniacal major Strauss plans to open the gates of Hell itself. The Mad Devils have been deployed to thwart this unhinged plan, but sometimes, heroism isn’t enough. Defeated, lost, and damned, regroup in hell for one last mission.

• Step into Sergeant Jack Asher’s shoes as he explores hell to reassemble your fallen squad. Twisted and gifted with demonic powers, he is armed with elemental and ethereal magic. Master them all and finish the fight.
• The roster of playable demon soldiers expands from six to eight, each with unique abilities and weapons. Fight side-by-side with either a friend or AI squadmate.
• Guns are not enough to smash the nazi’s ambitions, you will need chthonic weapons and enough magic to light up the stygian void. Collect demonic crystals to empower your weapons, and earn experience through violence.
• The netherworld is a strange and dangerous place, large regions are perpetually burning wastelands, and others are twisted reflections of the mortal world, dense with choking overgrowth, frozen by somber winds, or fortified by hell-bound nazi legions.

Mad Devils has good ideas, but it feels like a botched mission, as if the original order got lost in transmission on the way. The action is good when it works, but the contrasting tone and narrative bog down the broader experience. Still, conflicting story and visual design aside, if Mad Devils’ frenetic twin-stick shooting and setting are too good to pass up, make sure to take a friend. It’s dangerous in hell.

It was almost more enjoyable to catalog the glitches than it was playing the game. While I appreciate that the team behind Mad Devils is trying to deliver a good, solid shooter, I cannot in good conscience recommend it until the bugs are worked out and the level design is tweaked.

The most enjoyable part of Mad Devils was discovering a new bug or basic technical issue. I also seem to have lost my save data during an update, which required me to restart the whole campaign all over again. This means I have played more of this game than any person should ever have to.
