Amazon Prime Video has just dropped the first official look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, and the message is unmistakable: the “Classic” era is back.

Gone are the mud-caked survival gear and bow from the recent reboots. Turner dons the iconic teal tank top, braided ponytail, shorts, and, crucially, dual pistols, in what appears to be a faithful adaptation of the classic Tomb Raider games.
With production officially kicking off on January 19, Amazon is likely targeting an early 2027 release. The supporting cast is equally stacked, featuring Sigourney Weaver as a ruthless new antagonist and Jason Isaacs as Lara’s uncle, Atlas DeMornay.

Why The “Classic” Look Matters
For the last decade, Tomb Raider has been defined by the “Survivor Trilogy.” That iteration of Lara was grounded, gritty, and traumatized. She wore practical cargo pants and wielded a pickaxe.
Turner’s reveal flips the script entirely. The inclusion of the red circular sunglasses and the brown shorts points directly to the 1996 Core Design aesthetic.
This visual pivot suggests the show will ditch the grim survivalism for the high-octane, stylized action that made Lara a pop culture titan in the 90s. It’s a bold rejection of “realism” in favor of iconic adventure.

Waller-Bridge’s Vision: Fun Over Grit?
Showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) appears to be steering the franchise away from the serious tone of the Alicia Vikander 2018 film.
The “Survivor” games focused on Lara’s pain and growth. The “Classic” Lara was a confident, acrobatic superhero. By outfitting Turner in the OG gear, Amazon hopes the show embraces the camp and swagger of the original games.
This aligns with comments about “returning to the roots.” It breaks the modern trend of deconstructing heroes and simply lets Lara be the Tomb Raider again.
Is This The Lara We Needed?
Visually, yes. The decision to adapt the “Classic” look is a massive win for nostalgia and visual clarity. It separates the show immediately from the recent, somewhat generic gritty adaptations. If you want to revisit the classics before the show drops, the original games are frequently seeing massive discounts on digital storefronts right now.
