The definitive edition of Age of Empires II was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the game, with remastered HD graphics and soundtrack. AoE II is one of the most popular strategy games to this day and apart from the original content, this version features new campaigns, new civilizations, new game modes and cooperative play. It has more than 42 civilizations to choose from so variety and replayability isn't lacking.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is none other the remastered version of the 1999 classic rts that revolutionized the genre forever, a game that after over 20 years is still going strong and funnily enough have more than double the more recent Age of Empires IV player counts, despite having half of the peak players. Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition is mainly developed by Forgotten Empires, a team initially born as modders with the Forgotten Empire add-on but later hired by Microsoft for the remaster. With continuous updates, rebalances and especially new civilizations to play around, AoE 2 still focuses mainly on the multiplayer aspect, but the single player is nothing to scoff at. With a very strong tutorial campaign featuring William Wallace, and later one to introduce the players to new units as well as a new "tutorial" focusing on the competitive aspect to prepare the players for online matches, the community is still going strong with tournaments new strats and meta discovered with each update. The game see us going from a small community in the Dark Age flourishing into a vast empire in the Imperial Age, with a strong economy to back up new upgrades and costly units of later ages. Each units has its counterpart in a very ample but simple to understand rock-paper-scissors mechanics, but each civilization feature different playstyles enhanced by the civilization bonuses, unique techs and also access to certain techs. There are a total of 43 civilization as of now, with more to come in future dlcs, each cathering to different playstyles but also influenced by the type of maps. Some are navy focused civ, while others have strong infantry, archery or cavalry. There are also civilization with more balanced approach but stronger economy and other with limited access to techs and units but a very easy and fast economy with tons of bonuses. Into the mix there are also unique units often requiring or created at the Castle, which also host unique techs, all having special bonuses and different stats then their counterpart. While it may sounds overwhelming, but make AoE 2 special is how there's a lot of content to entertain every kind of player, whether more chilled and other looking for a challenge. Not to mention it features an extremely strong editor to create your own map and even a whole campaign! As well as play and battle your friends! You can also set up a PvE with your friends, as well as flood their cities with trading carts! Moreover the game is now extremely cheap, although with DLCs locking behind newer civilizations it can easily add up. If you are a fan of RTS this is simply a must, and even if you don't like it as much as you should, this is also an important piece of the genre history along with other classics.

Can't wait for Age Of Empires 4 to be released! But in meantime this one is a must have. Too bad there is still a lag issue when playing with very large army's.
