Among all survival city builders, Against the Storm has to be the most rich in content. I say this as someone who has spent many hours in Frostpunk, Banished and similar titles. The gameplay is fast-paced, and each run won’t be the same as the previous one, thanks to the roguelike mechanics. I was very surprised by the quality of this game, considering that I didn’t know the developers at all and therefore didn’t have many expectations.
In Against the Storm, you play as the Viceroy, who must build a successful colony while keeping the inhabitants happy. In addition, you’ll have to carry out the Queen’s orders and explore the environment, dealing with random events and threats. As in Frostpunk, you’ll have to keep an eye on two bars: the red one for the Queen’s impatience, and the blue one for your reputation. You win the game as soon as you’ve earned all the reputation points by making people happy, completing events or accomplishing tasks. There’s no single method that will lead you to victory; what’s important is to use the resources you have to your advantage.
Each time you play, you only unlock a certain percentage of all available buildings and special abilities. That’s why you need to be very careful and thoughtful when accepting a new order or selecting a blueprint. There are also a wide variety of modifiers that can make the game more difficult. Against the Storm is a real challenge, and victories on higher difficulties feel rewarding.
What’s more, the graphics and soundtrack are superb. I could go on and on about how great it is, but you’d better try it for yourself!
