Alan Wake 2 PC Patch: Huge Performance Boost for GTX 10-Series GPUs

The sequel to Alan Wake, which follows the story of the renowned writer in a world of darkness and mystery, has certainly struck many players from a narrative standpoint, as well as visually. With Alan Wake 2, Remedy has definitely showcased all the capabilities of the Northlight Engine with new features and modern visual effects such as Ray Tracing and Mesh Shaders.

However, these have come at a significant cost in terms of performance, relegating the title not only to newer hardware on PC but also making it inaccessible on more modest hardware due to the use of DirectX 12 Ultimate features. But we have good news from Digital Foundry on this front.

Alan Wake 2: What Does the New Patch Bring

Alex Battaglia, from Digital Foundry, tells us that the team has received a preview of the patch that Remedy Entertainment intends to release soon for Alan Wake 2. Alex comments that this will represent a significant patch aimed at optimizing performance in general on PC, but sees a good improvement on cards lacking support for DirectX 12 Ultimate, specifically Mesh Shaders.

Mesh Shaders is one of the features that works thanks to hardware compatible with DirectX 12 Ultimate (compatible with Nvidia RTX 2000 and AMD RX 6000 series and above). This feature allows developers to better control the geometry that appears on the screen, significantly improving the visual detail of such geometries.

Alan Wake 2: Digital Foundry Analysis on GTX 10 Series and Others

We have an interesting comparison between pre-patch performance and post-patch performance. Although the new patch brings performance increases across all Nvidia cards, there’s a significant increase of about 14% on the RTX 4000 series. But the most important part is dedicated to the GTX 10 series, which sees a considerable increase, no longer causing audio glitches due to low framerates. Unfortunately, the 900 series has rendering issues, while on the AMD side, Polaris (RX 400 and 500) has continuous crashing problems, and RDNA 1 (5000 series) doesn’t see a significant increase, still experiencing some frametime issues, albeit less frequently than before.

Alex analyzes, along with Richard, the performance using “PS5 Performance” settings, a mix of low and medium, with FSR 2 on Balanced, analyzing GTX 1060, 1070, 1080, and 1080 Ti seeing an average increase of at least 40%. On the GTX 1060, we go from an average of 19 FPS to about 27 during exploration, although it reaches around 40 during sections in the Mind Palace. However, it fails to reach at least 30 FPS during exploration, and even lowering the settings doesn’t seem to have any impact. The 1070, on the other hand, goes from about 20-22 FPS to 35 FPS on average, comfortably staying above 30 with minor dips here and there. The 1080 goes from 27 FPS to well over 48 FPS. Finally, the legendary 1080Ti, despite reaching 7 years old this 10th March , performs amazingly, going from 28 FPS to around 58 FPS. Thanks to this, the 1080Ti is about 20% slower than PS5, but still acceptable given its age.

Alan Wake 2: When Does the Patch Release and What to Expect in the Future

The preview patch that the Digital Foundry team received will arrive on 6 March 2024. Not only will we have a significant increase for Nvidia GTX 10 series cards and also RTX 4000 series, but also some improvements in certain areas of the game. Although the AMD 5000 series cards (RDNA 1) are not very relevant for the patch, it is hoped that AMD will collaborate with Remedy to at least fix the framerate drop issues during gameplay, given the relevance that this series will have for gamers on a limited budget. For now, owners of a 1060 6GB with a tolerance for around 28 FPS and slightly less can try Alan Wake 2, while those with a 1070 or better will be able to achieve about 30 FPS and enjoy the title this way.
