The Crew Races Again This Month As Modders Revive Ubisoft’s Shutdown Game
The Crew is back this month as the community project to revive the game is almost finished. The Crew Unlimited launches on Sept 15.
Ubisoft’s shutdown of The Crew over a year ago was monumental. Not only was it the death of a great game, but it was also the spark that ignited the Stop Killing Games campaign. The whole thing was a mess. Players (and rightly so) fought for their ownership rights having paid for a game, and Ubisoft clarified that what people pay for is only a license and not the game itself. A “loophole” no one saw coming.
Everyone understood that no one can keep the servers running indefinitely especially for a game that’s more than a decade old. But an end-of-life plan should have been made before the shutdown, even just a sign of gratitude to players who supported the franchise and the studio.
This would have been all fixed if Ubisoft had just made an offline mode for the players who bought the game. Like many others did. Well right now, we all know that’s not going to happen. But thanks to the community, The Crew fans, and dedicated modders, we no longer need Ubisoft’s permission to get back on the track.
The Crew Unlimited Gets A Release Date
The Crew Unlimited has been working for over a year now to bring life back to the game. And for those waiting for the project’s success, the wait is almost over. Project lead whammy4 announced on Discord that it will release on September 15, 2025. Following this, The Crew Unlimited website also published the announcement.
“We were trying everything we could, anything to preserve the game. We eventually came to the conclusion that writing a Server Emulator for The Crew was the best and only solution. This would allow us to effectively implement both an Offline Mode and an Online Mode back into the game, Offline Mode simply being a local server running on your computer while playing the game. Your local server, your local savegames, your game. No one will ever be able to take this away from you now.”

Being that the upcoming release is now public, the wait is nerve-racking. One side is excited to get back in the game and the other, anxious as Ubisoft may send a legal notice and stop the launch. Plus, we don’t want the good-hearted modders in trouble!
What happens next, time will tell. But this definitely feels like a win for the community already.
