Terranigma: A 16-Bit Legend Returns in 2027

One of the most elusive 16-bit action RPGs is finally making a comeback after decades of being stranded on retro hardware. JRPG fans from the 90s are over the moon today as Clear River Games announced that Terranigma is coming out of the vault after over 30 years. It is releasing in early 2027 for pretty much all major platforms including PS5, PS4, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox, and PC. And yes, both Steam and GOG right off the bat, too.

Clear River Games officially revealed the revival during the recently concluded Pixel Arcadia retro showcase. For fans who grew up with the Super Famicom era of JRPGs, this is a big deal. Terranigma was released in Japan and parts of Europe in the mid-’90s, but it never received an official release in North America.

That absence helped give the game something of a mythical reputation among Western players, particularly those who spent years hearing about it without having an easy way to play it themselves. But that changes in 2027 when the game launches on modern hardware.

   

The team did not specify what new features or modern optimizations we can expect but they did share that new key art and in-game designs will be headed by celebrated artist Kamui Fujiwara, who was also part of the original team involved in designing characters, the world, and even some of the game settings.

The music is also getting some attention from members of the original team. Masanori Hikichi and Miyoko Kobayashi are returning to work on the soundtrack including new arrangements of select songs from the original game.

Finally, and probably a highlight of the announcement, Clear River Games also confirmed that there will be a physical release for the game. For a sought-after classic, a physical edition seems more than deserving.

So now, the question is, when are we getting Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia?

   

Developed by Quintet, Terranigma is a 1995 action RPG that follows Ark, a mischievous boy from the Darkside village of Crysta who accidentally sets off a chain of events that sends him on a journey to reshape the world. Combining traditional RPG exploration and storytelling with fast-paced real-time combat, the game lets players directly control Ark as he attacks enemies with his spear using thrusts, jump attacks, dashes, and other moves. Its world is built around the mysterious relationship between the Lightside and Darkside of Earth, while its story explores recurring themes of creation, destruction, growth, and loss.
