A 50-Year Epic: How Big is Stranger Than Heaven?

RGG Studio is stepping away from modern-day Kamurocho to deliver a massive historical narrative in the anticipated Stranger Than Heaven. According to executive director Masayoshi Yokoyama, the game has been in development for up to seven years.

The story spans 50 years, from 1915 to 1965, following protagonists Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo. Players will explore five distinct cities: Kokura, Kure, Osaka, Atami, and Shinjuku.

While map scales remain comparable to the standard Like a Dragon entries, Yokoyama confirmed in an interview with Automaton that the game features a higher density of fully explorable building interiors.


Will Stranger Than Heaven Play Like Yakuza?

Stranger Than Heaven will not play like a traditional Yakuza game. RGG Studio has confirmed it is a completely new title with distinct combat, UI, and controls. The game will feature fewer minigames and adopt a much more serious tone for its substories, excluding corporate tie-ins like SEGA arcades.

Because the timeline stretches back to 1915, players cannot expect modern amenities. The historical lens means “Play Spots” are severely reduced to fit the specific time periods. Progression is strictly linear. Once Makoto leaves Kokura for Kure, players cannot return to the previous city, adding permanent weight to the passage of time.


The Snoop Dogg and Tupac Connection

The casting choices for the game are highly unconventional, focusing heavily on musical talent to support the core “show business” mechanic.

The protagonists rely on show business as a neutral ground to escape racial discrimination in Japan. Actors Yu Shirota and Dean Fujioka were cast specifically for their vocal abilities and bilingual skills.

International hip-hop icons Snoop Dogg and Tupac are also involved. Yokoyama explained that Tupac’s inclusion was a late development, coordinated directly through Snoop Dogg and Tupac’s estate, with Tupac’s family approval, to fill a critical narrative role.

Fiction Over Historical Accuracy

Despite the heavy real-world grounding, RGG Studio is prioritizing gameplay over strict historical realism. Yokoyama explicitly stated that the development team is focused on telling “game-like lies” to create optimal spaces for action. Historical references serve only as a baseline.

For instance, players visiting Atami in 1951 will find the Hotel New Akao, a building that did not actually open until 1954. Major real-world events will also be ignored unless they directly impact the protagonist.


Release Date and Upcoming Showcases

Players eager to test the new mechanics will have opportunities before the official launch. RGG Studio plans to hold hands-on previews to bridge the gap between audience expectations and the new systems.

More information regarding gameplay and mechanics is slated for Tokyo Game Show 2026 this September. Stranger Than Heaven launches globally on January 15, 2027, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass.
