Stranger Than Heaven features RGG’s most savage combat yet [Trailer]

RGG Studio is taking us across five distinct eras in Japanese history

Key Takeaways: The Quick Answer

  • Game Pass Launch: Stranger Than Heaven will be available Day One on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Cloud.
  • Massive Scale: The story spans five distinct time periods (1915 to 1965) across five different Japanese cities.
  • Dedicated Showcase: Microsoft and RGG Studio are hosting a deep-dive broadcast on May 6.

RGG Studio dropped a massive surprise during the latest Xbox Partner Preview. Stranger Than Heaven (previously known as Project Century) just got a fresh trailer, and the sheer scale of the project looks ridiculous.

Even better for your wallet—it is officially confirmed as a Day One release on Xbox Game Pass.

You won’t have to wait long for the full gameplay breakdown, either. Xbox is hosting a dedicated broadcast next month to show off exactly what this title is all about.

5 Cities, 5 Eras: A Massive Undertaking

The new footage confirms a timeline structure we rarely see in gaming. Stranger Than Heaven takes place in 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. That means five distinct historical eras spread across five different Japanese cities.

Executive Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama admitted this is a monumental task for the studio. They are heavily focused on recreating specific times and places that video games usually ignore completely.

Brutal Combat and Jazz Rhythms

If you play Yakuza or Like a Dragon, you already know RGG Studio handles street brawling perfectly. The combat shown here feels familiar but significantly more savage.

Expect a heavy focus on raw martial arts, brutal environmental takedowns, and intense one-versus-many grappling.

Yokoyama teased that this represents an entirely new level of combat design for the team. The trailer also featured some incredible jazz-drumming tracks, proving music will remain a massive part of the experience.

The May 6 Broadcast: When to Watch

The upcoming “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven” event will crack the game wide open. RGG promises detailed looks at the cast, the music, and that brutal combat system.

If you are watching from Europe, you’ll need a lot of coffee. The event officially kicks off at 1:00 AM CEST on May 7 (which translates to 4:00 PM PDT on May 6).

We will see the full all-star cast then. Until that showcase drops, we just have to keep replaying that partner preview trailer.
