Stormgate was supposed to be the chosen one—the RTS that finally brought back that StarCraft magic. Instead, it’s facing a digital blackout.

Frost Giant Studios just confirmed that by the end of April, the game’s multiplayer servers are going dark.

Why Stormgate Servers Are Vanishing

The core issue isn’t just a lack of interest. According to official Discord updates, the server partner Hathora was acquired by Fireworks AI.

This new owner isn’t interested in maintaining low-latency gaming infrastructure. Instead, they are pivoting to “compute orchestration for AI inference at scale.”

Because of this, Hathora is winding down all gaming services. For a game built on ex-Blizzard talent, losing your backbone while finding your footing is a nightmare.

Historically, RTS titles live or die by their netcode and server stability. Without a partner to manage matchmaking, the “always-online” dream has hit a wall.


The AI Pivot That Left Gamers Behind

The developer’s struggle is compounded by a dwindling player base. While the project secured $35,000,000 in funding, the 1.0 release failed to keep momentum.

Recent data shows concurrent player numbers haven’t exceeded double digits since December 2025. With a 24-hour peak of only 28 players, finding a partner is an uphill battle.

Most providers won’t see the profit in a game that isn’t currently moving the needle. It’s a tough pill for those who paid the Premium retail price for supporter packs.

We’re seeing another example of how fragile modern gaming is when it relies entirely on third-party infrastructure. Sadly, coming a few weeks after the recent Community Update which brought a plethora of additions, including 2v2 ladder, 4 new units and lots of maps.

Can Stormgate Survive as a Solo Experience?

There is one small win for the community. Frost Giant Studios promised to patch Stormgate so it can be played offline.

You’ll still have access to the campaign and solo modes. This is more than most defunct live-service games can say. The developers claim they want to restore online play eventually, but that depends on finding a new partner. For now, the focus is strictly on preservation.

It’s a sad turn for a game that raised millions but couldn’t survive the AI gold rush.
