Starfield will be galactically huge

During the Xbox Showcase Livestream on June 11, gameplay footage of Starfield was finally revealed. But what can you expect now, and can your PC handle Starfield at all? In this article, we will clarify all of that.

  Starfield

Starfield is the latest Bethesda game that has been in development since 2015 and was announced in 2018, which is why many fans have been eagerly awaiting its release. The wait is almost over, as Starfield will finally be available on September 6, 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. There are no plans for a PlayStation release. Instead, Starfield will be directly available on the release day through Xbox Game Pass.

Starfield will be an action RPG, similar to Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls Skyrim, but with a slightly larger game world – to be precise, over 1000 times larger in terms of planets. However, you don’t have to worry about spending minutes flying from planet to planet. Through a form of fast travel, you can quickly jump between planets.

It is expected that these planets will be inhabited by various creatures and will feature many cities. The exact extent of the planets is still disputed, as it is unlikely that over 1000 different cities have been created on all the planets.

Regardless of how the planets will be inhabited by humans in the game, they are intended to shine in exceptional light. Bethesda wants to generate real-time lighting on each planet in their new game, so that each planet appears in a completely different light depending on the atmosphere, proximity to the sun, etc., creating a cinematic gaming experience.

The overall graphics of Starfield have also impressed with the vast number of biomes and the general appearance.

The Leveling System in Starfield

In Starfield, you will need to level up your character just like in Skyrim and Fallout. You gain experience by defeating enemies, completing missions, and so on.

With your levels, you can unlock various abilities that you can choose based on your playstyle. Whether you prefer to stay in the shadows and remain unseen by enemies, talk your way out of a conflict, or simply take down opponents in ranged or melee combat, Starfield offers all these options and many more.

Once you have learned a skill, you must continue to improve it over time. There are 4 ranks for each skill, with the first rank being unlocked with a point upon leveling up. However, reaching the higher ranks requires specific challenges to be completed.

For example, if you have learned the lockpicking skill, the rank increases only by picking many locks, similar to Skyrim. However, you always have to fulfill certain tasks to further develop your abilities.

Starfield provides you with many opportunities to utilize your skill points. For instance, you can unlock a jetpack that enhances your mobility on the planets. There is also a skill, for example, that allows you to control creatures from other planets to fight for you.

With the jetpack, you can not only move faster but also shoot down your enemies from the air, creating a moment of surprise. However, be cautious as the gravity varies on each planet, and you may fly much higher on some planets than on others.

Story

The main story of the game revolves around your encounter with the organization “Constellation,” an ancient organization that few people know still exists.

They are searching for answers to humanity’s unanswered questions. On your quest for extraordinary artifacts, you will be constantly surprised by enemies on the planets, whom you can defeat in first- or third-person perspective.

According to Todd Howard, the Game Director at Bethesda, the main story is expected to last 30-40 hours, making it longer than in any other Bethesda game. It is said to contain more missions than the main story in Skyrim or Fallout 4.

As is customary in open-world Bethesda games, you will be bombarded with hundreds of side quests along the way, often causing the main story to be initially neglected. Bethesda aims to create a connection between the side missions, sometimes making you unaware that you are getting involved in a major new story.

Similar to Skyrim, it will also be possible to interact with children in Starfield, but it is not yet known if you can adopt them later, as in Skyrim.

Your Ship

In Starfield, as expected, you have a spaceship that allows you to travel between planets. You must upgrade your ship over time to be able to jump to more distant planets.

To obtain resources, you can mine resources on the ground on all planets, moons, etc., similar to No Man’s Sky. Before visiting a planet, you can also scan it to discover interesting locations or find out what resources are available on the planet.

Ultimately, you can land at any location on the planet, whether it’s in the wilderness or in a familiar city.

There is not just a single spaceship, but many different types of ships. There are ships with extra cargo space if you want to perform freight transport, or ships with stronger weaponry to prove yourself in bounty hunting.

In Starfield, you can decide how to build your ship. You can customize almost everything, from its appearance to its equipment and weapons.

Combat

In Starfield, you will have to engage in battles both on planets and in space. Let’s start with space combat.

During battles, you must allocate the energy of your ship to different modules. For example, if you are under heavy fire, it’s wise to direct your energy to the shields. If you want to quickly destroy your enemy, it’s best to allocate your energy to the weapons.

The outcome of a battle also depends on your skills and those of your crew, which we will discuss in more detail shortly.

For instance, you can learn the “Targeting Control” skill, which allows you to lock onto your enemies and not miss your shots.

In battles, you control your ship yourself, as seen in various space games. You can either destroy your enemies and collect their loot afterward or, if you have inflicted enough damage on the enemy, similar to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, dock with their ship and defeat all enemies on board with your own hands.

When fighting without your ship, you have access to more weapons than in other Bethesda games. You can equip them with different types of ammunition, such as explosive rounds or rounds that freeze an opponent.

In zero gravity combat, the weapons with ammunition can quickly push you backward. To prevent that, you can, for example, use energy weapons that do not generate recoil in such situations.

Once you have defeated all enemies, the ship becomes yours, and you can incorporate it into your fleet. You can either pilot it directly yourself or send it to a port to store your ship temporarily. You can also dismantle it for new parts.

However, you don’t always have to fight against every ship in the galaxy. Some are kind enough not to attack you, for instance if you have adopted the same religion as the bandits.

Alternatively, you can engage in trade with peaceful ships or enjoy yourself on massive party ships or space stations where you may also take on some new missions.

Your Crew

Now let’s talk about your crew. Your crew lives with you on your spaceship and supports you, for example, in battles. All crew members that you can hire have different abilities that can assist you on board or on the planet. These can be skills that help you in combat or make scanning planets more effective.

You can meet and recruit new crew members at all spaceports or save them through missions and persuade them to join your crew.

Your crew members provide you with unique missions, but that’s not all. The crew members also interact with each other and can, for example, develop into a couple.

To accommodate a larger crew on your ship, you can create space for them by adding new living quarters to your ship.

You can also station your crew at outposts similar to Fallout, which you can establish on almost all planets. These outposts passively gather resources and serve as a second home for you.

To capture the beauty of your base or simply the planet itself, you can switch to the photo mode at any time. There, due to the beautiful lighting, you can take film-like pictures to preserve the memories.

System Requirements

The system requirements for optimal settings in a game of this size are quite high. Below, I will tell you the components you should ideally have in your PC to enjoy Starfield.

The minimum system requirements for the PC version of Starfield are:

  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K
  • Storage Place: 125 GB SSD
  • Operating System: Windows 10

The recommended system requirements are:

  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel i5-10600K
  • Storage Place: 125 GB SSD
  • Operating System: Windows 10/11

It’s immediately noticeable that Starfield must be installed on an SSD and has high graphical requirements for optimal settings. Unfortunately, the Xbox cannot match this level of graphics performance, so the game will run at 30 FPS on the Xbox, which is quite disappointing for a game of this nature.

Does Starfield have multiplayer?

Many people wonder if they can play Starfield with their friends. Unfortunately, just like in Fallout or Skyrim, multiplayer is not possible in Starfield as it is a purely single-player game.
