Square Enix has announced that all future game releases will launch simultaneously across all major platforms in a move that could reshape gaming. Naoki Yoshida, known for his work on Final Fantasy, has revealed the company will begin their new strategy with the upcoming Fantasian Neo Dimension, which comes to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch on December 5, 2024.
Earlier this year, Square Enix promised to release its games across Xbox and PC from day one, removing Sony exclusivity. In its end-of-year financial reports for 2023-2024, Square Enix outlined its plans, stating, “For HD titles, the Group will aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.”
Historically, Square Enix launched its games on PlayStation as timed exclusives before releasing them on PC and Xbox later. The new Square Enix strategy begins with Fantasian Neo Dimension, which launches December 5 on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch.
Square Enix’s shift in strategy follows a reported $140 million loss on multiple games they canceled in the last financial year. In the post to investors, CEO Takashi Kiryu expressed the company’s intention to be “more selective and focused in the allocation of development resources.” As part of the restructuring, Square Enix may believe releasing their future titles on all platforms simultaneously will maximize profits.
In recent years, developers and publishers have slowly moved away from platform-exclusive launches, most recently with Ubisoft deciding to release its games on Steam from day one, beginning with Assassin’s Creed Shadows on February 14, 2025.
Many will welcome Square Enix’s decision as platform-exclusive deals restrict the number of gamers who can play the games. The company also plans to revive a few of its older titles, according to the financial report.
With Square Enix’s new business strategy, fans across all platforms can expect to pick up future Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games from day one. Many hope to see Vagrant Story re-released and a remaster of Parasite Eve.
