SEGA’s New Crazy Taxi Reboot: A 100-Player Service Game?

Crazy Taxi is a series that hasn’t been heard from in years, yet during the 2023 Game Awards amidst a parade of many SEGA-branded titles, we got to catch a glimpse of a new game.

And especially according to some recent rumors, we can expect quite a few surprises from this new Crazy Taxi. In the meanwhile you can try these arcade driving games while waiting for further news on the new Crazy Taxi.

Regarding the Crazy Taxi series

Crazy Taxi is a series that originated on Arcade in 1999, receiving a home port on Dreamcast in 2000 and subsequently on PlayStation 2 and PC, with annual releases until Crazy Taxi 3 in 2002. The series then continued in the form of spin-offs or more contained titles, with Catch a Ride for GBA and Fare Wars for PSP, with the latest title dated in 2014 with the free-to-play and mobile Crazy Taxi City Rush. Ignoring Crazy Taxi Tycoon, which was only a managerial and idle clicker and had little to do with the series.

What made the series popular was how the game offered a glimpse of open-world in the early 2000s, with a fairly large game map where players navigated through traffic, performing combos and special stunts, and trying to reach each destination as quickly as possible. And it’s precisely the ability to try stunts and shortcuts that made the title memorable.

SEGA Sapporo Studio and rumors about the new Crazy Taxi

If at The Game Awards SEGA showed that they are working on bringing back many of their beloved franchises, including Crazy Taxi, we also need to investigate SEGA’s plans regarding these new titles. In fact, starting from an article reported by The Japantimes, SEGA has decided to open a new development studio in Sapporo starting from 2021. A sign of a phenomenon that has been spreading lately in Japan, namely the decision to create a calmer team in Sapporo with a less hectic lifestyle compared to cities like Tokyo, and with a recent interview with the president of SEGA Sapporo, Takaya Segawa, confirming that the team was created to assist the main teams, including in the creation of the new Crazy Taxi.

Meanwhile, recent rumors from user Midori on Twitter talk about some content of the new Crazy Taxi. Midori indeed states that the new Crazy Taxi appears to be a cross between a reboot and a remake, where the title seems to be positioned as a driving game inspired by GTA Online and with a primarily online component. He also speaks of a battle royale mode and how the online component, with up to 100 players simultaneously, brings a sort of leaderboard reminiscent of arcade versions. Not to mention the potential for microtransactions or the possibility of free-to-play. In short, so far they are just rumors, but it seems that SEGA is indeed intending to bring back the series as a true modern AAA title.
