Ubisoft appears ready to break the mold with the Rainbow Six franchise again. Fresh leaks point to a radical departure from first-person shooting, pivoting instead toward a tactical turn-based strategy experience.

According to an exclusive report from Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is currently developing a turn-based strategy game set within the Rainbow Six Siege universe.
Moving away from the first-person intensity of Siege, this unannounced title aims to blend squad-based management with precise strategic planning. It is a bold departure for the franchise, signaling Ubisoft’s intent to expand the IP into new genres.

Rainbow Six Turn-Based Tactics Game: What We Know
Insider Gaming says sources describes “top-down” tactical experience that sources compare directly to XCOM and Diablo 4. Instead of reflex-based shooting, players will command a squad of familiar Rainbow Six Siege operators, utilizing their unique gadgets and abilities in a turn-based environment.
- The Loop: Master the grid. Players will select operators based on mission requirements, raid buildings, and rescue hostages using a “cover, move, shoot” system similar to classic strategy titles.
- Scope: Anticipate a substantial campaign. The game is reportedly targeting a playtime of 25–30 hours, focusing heavily on PvE narrative rather than PvP competition.
- Platform Targets: Expect a release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and potentially the Nintendo Switch 2.
The game is being built as a full tactical experience, emphasizing squad management and the smart use of iconic gadgets. You aren’t just pulling the trigger; you are the commander moving the pieces.
R6 Tactics vs XCOM & Siege
While Rainbow Six Siege defined the modern tactical shooter with its destructible environments and verticality, this new title adopts an isometric perspective.
The camera is described as “somewhat similar to Diablo 4,” offering a broad view of the battlefield rather than the tight, claustrophobic angles of Siege.
Unlike XCOM’s often punishing permadeath mechanics for generic soldiers, you are controlling established heroes. The challenge will likely come from synergistic ability usage, such as combining Thermite’s breaching charges with Monty’s shield in a turn-based sequence rather than real-time chaos.
Is This The Right Move for Ubisoft?
Ubisoft is taking a gamble, but it is a calculated one. After the mixed reception of Rainbow Six Extraction, fans have been wary of spinoffs. However, the tactical strategy genre fits the franchise’s DNA far better than zombie survival ever did.
If the developers can balance the tension of Siege with the cerebral depth of turn-based tactics, this could be the refresh the series desperately needs.
Do you think a turn-based Rainbow Six game can capture the intensity of Siege, or should they stick to FPS?
