Postal Bullet Paradise was canceled after AI-use backlash, sparking Discord chaos and Goonswarm Games shutting down.
Postal Bullet Paradise was an upcoming entry for the provocative FPS franchise Postal, being developed by Goonswarm Games and published by Running With Scissors. However, just under two days from its reveal, it was pulled back and ultimately cancelled due to overwhelming negative feedback, mostly due to heavy use of AI.
Postal Bullet Paradise Cancelled Over Alleged use of Generative AI
Oh boy, where do we even start? Postal games, as it is, is quite controversial but it has gone into a whole level of controversy to the point that its newly-announced game was cancelled and the studio behind it, Goonswarm Games, is shutting down over immense backlash for allegedly using generative AI heavily. These were denied initially and while no actual admission was given, RSW posted the cancellation with a line “Our trust in the development team is broken” which is very telling.
But it’s not just the accusations that caused the killing of the game. It didn’t help that some heated discussions ensued on the Postal Discord server between the public and some RWS devs.
A notable one was Mike Jaret who REALLY defended the game and the studio, saying no AI was used. He went as far as throwing comments to the community like “they can literally eat my shit” and “the anti AI mob has ruined art.” There’s also a Zeron from RWS saying, “You’re a retard for believing we do.” Of course, all of that, like everything on the internet, is immortalized by screenshots which can be seen in the thread at X.
We'd like of course to apologize to anyone who felt insulted in the heat of the moment and we thank you for raising concerns at the time. As for those who specifically sent us death threats, the apology does not apply.

Apart from the game cancellation, this whole thing ended badly for the studio as well. According to Polygon and eventually an official statement on the studio’s X account, Goonswarm Games is now shutting down. In their statement, they shared that they have mistakenly been accused of using AI-generated art in the game and that their attempts to clarify only escalated the situation.
While one can argue that some mistake AI for really, just bad art, there’s some “interesting” scenarios that happened during this controversy. One of the accusations was using AI for some of their Youtube thumbnails. DrNick1221 shared on Reddit, that as he was taking a screenshot of the channel, the studio were seemingly in the process of making the videos private. Then as soon as he refreshed it, everything was gone. He didn’t say it but it was pretty clear what he was insinuating.

Although the reveal trailer is still on Youtube and the Steam page can still be seen (with a notice saying “POSTAL: Bullet Paradise is no longer available on the Steam store), the future of the project is ultimately dead. Goonswarm Games CEO Artem Korovkin said that they still own the source code but they don’t think continuing developing the game is realistic.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) this whole AI controversy may have just sped up the failure of the game it could have been. Many people who’ve seen the trailer did mention that it didn’t look great. Actually, the franchise has not been for the past few entries, with maybe the exception of Brain Damage and Postal 2. Many also voiced out that Postal is already a thing in the past as the humor which made it famous in the first place isn’t doing its thing anymore.
