What is No Rest For The Wicked

No Rest For The Wicked is a new experience from the Moon Studios team, the famous Austrian team that delivered a magical experience with the two Ori games. With this new game, the team ventures into a genre they haven’t explored before, offering an intriguing Action RPG. 841 years after the event known as the Embrace, with the death of the benevolent king Harol soon succeeded by the arrogant son Magnus.

Meanwhile, we witness the return of the Plague, and a figure from the Church, Madrigal Seline, sees an opportunity to rise to power. In this climate of insecurity and danger, as a member of the Cerim, an order formed with the intent of fighting the Plague, you will find yourself involved in the events of Sacred Isle, amidst political intrigues and the threat of the Plague. Check also the Ori games if you like the style.

No Rest For The Wicked: The 90-Minute Gameplay Showcase

With a substantial showcase of 90 minutes in collaboration with Ian Higton of Eurogamer, where we start with character creation, which seems to be limited only to the face and gender. After the cutscene, we find ourselves in The Shallows, and the game is shown with an isometric view, accompanied by a graphical style reminiscent of Ori. This initial gameplay area will serve as a tutorial, featuring classic RPG looting, equipment, and questing systems.

The game’s dark tones are visible right from the start, and the influences are not only from Diablo but definitely more akin to the style of Dark Souls. From the highly dynamic combat, where damage occurs only if visually connected, and indeed we have the parry and dodge typical of Dark Souls, all dictated by stamina. Another significant influence is definitely that of the bosses, powerful and often with unsettling designs, as we get a taste with Warrick The Torn, who gave Ian a hard time. In fact, unable to defeat the boss, he instead explored the game further before time ran out. The role of equipment, as well as level and food, which will heal you in battle, is also important.

What to Expect from No Rest For The Wicked in the Future

In short, thanks to the showcase, many are excited about No Rest For The Wicked, a challenging ARPG that combines much-loved elements of the Dark Souls genre. The fact that it’s the team behind Ori promises well for many, who greatly appreciate the highly atmospheric and depressing graphical style that reflects the game world. In fact, the team aims to reinvent the RPG genre by offering something fresh, with a highly talented and enthusiastic team, as well as active community feedback thanks to the choice of Early Access. Therefore, updates introducing multiplayer, a new area, and future content are on the horizon.
