For many horror fans, 2026 was a year to watch out for as a new Paranormal Activity game was supposed to release which offered to bring the franchise’s signature tension to a playable format. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case this year or ever as the game is now officially cancelled.

Paranormal Activity: Threshold Has Officially Been Cancelled

The game was first announced back in 2024 under the title Paranormal Activity Found Footage. It was being developed by DarkStone Digital alongside publisher DreadXP in collaboration with Paramount Game Studios. Evnetually, the project was renamed Paranormal Activity Threshold which gave fans another reminder that the game was still in development even if updates had become pretty sparse afterward.

Interest in the project saw a brief resurgence late last year when Paramount announced a 2027 window for the next film in the franchise. While the movie side of the brand seemed to be moving forward, the same couldn’t be said for the game. DreadXP and DarkStone Digital confirmed today that they are no longer moving forward with the project.

According to solo developer Brian Clarke, he and DreadXP had asked Paramount for additional development time to properly finish the game. Unfortunately, the request was denied.

In a post shared on social media, Clarke explained that he was left with two options, release a version of the game he wasn’t happy with or walk away from the project. He chose the latter.

That decision is understandably disappointing for horror fans. The series’ tense atmosphere, camera-based scares, and confined settings could have translated extremely well into an interactive horror experience. There was also a lot of confidence behind Brian Clarke leading the project after the success of The Mortuary Assistant which became one of the more talked-about indie horror games in recent years. But then again, an un-finished game is worse.

In the end, this is one of the realities that comes with licensed projects. Development timelines, approvals, and publisher agreements can sometimes get in the way of finishing a game the way creators intended. And for now, Paranormal Activity Threshold joins the long list of titles that never made it to release.
